This was posted to the home page of a popular Web site that is known for monitoring the demise of dot com businesses. http://www.f*ckedcompany.com

"Green day
Despite the fact that they make money, rumor has it eBay is gonna lay off around 15% over the next few weeks.
When: 8/10/2001
Company: eBay
Severity: 10
Points: 102
178 comments in the Happy Fun Slander Corner!"

Has anyone heard anything similar?

Ebay denied that claim, and has reported that they are hiring workers.

thanks quickdraw29,

Do you know where I can see the eBay comment on this report?

Here's a copy/paste of the report:

"SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)A rumor on a popular Internet site that Internet auction company eBay Inc. (EBAY) will soon lay off 15% of its workforce is false, according to an eBay spokesman.
The Internet site Fcompany.com, which often accurately chronicles the tribulations at dotcom companies, said Friday that eBay was planning to lay off off the workers over the next few weeks. But a spokesman at eBay of San Jose, Calif., insisted the rumor was untrue, saying that eBay is, in fact, still hiring new workers."

I suppose that when a false rumor is leaked about "upward guidance" (and eBay refutes it, but not before the stock price jumps), you should also expect someone else to leak a false rumor that eBay is in trouble & laying off people...

Wall Street is very corrupt. Anyone that realizes that won't be surprised at all by rumors of this nature. Ditto for "pumping and dumping" by "analysts" like Blodgett, Meeker, et al.

BTW, eBay has 40 open positions right now. You can see them by taking the "jobs" link on the home page.

That doesn't necessarily mean they won't be laying off in other areas. There are some things eBay has which are obvious "bombs". Much like they ripped through Butterfields (laying off virtually everyone there), it wouldn't surprise me to see a similar approach in other areas. Everyone here knows that US auctions are stagnant, with little prospect near term of growing much over where they're at now (in fact, I believe they may even continue shrinking a bit, just as they have been since Dec of 2000).

They certainly don't need "heavy" staffing in areas that have demonstrated they aren't growing IMHO.

check out some of the comments on the greenday board concerning this. It appears they allow a bit more freedom of expression there as opposed to say the mods on this board...just an observation not an indictment

eBay won't be the first company that denied lay off "rumors" posted on the FC board, which later turned out to be true.

FC seems to have a lot of insiders passing info to him, and most of it turns out to be straight dope.

eBay won't be the first dot com with posted openings while lay offs are in the works.

I can vooch for the site, too. A bit of gossip concerning a well known dotcom company going out of biz and who was going to buy up all the goodies at firesale prices was listed there long before there was any public acknowledgement.

I just had dinner with an exec with a fortune 500 consulting firm. Seems everything is turning to sh*t real fast and in nearly every sector. His company has laid off and those laid off are having real trouble finding work. Of course his firm laid off because their work load dropped.

We may see eBay with no revenue growth in one or more of the next 3 quarters YOY.
