Big controversy on local talk radio.

Seller buys tickets for $300, sells them on eBay for $700. Concert is cancelled. Tickets are redeemable for $300 face value.

Does buyer eat the $400?

It's arguable either way, but I think that if the ticket company issues refunds, then the reseller probably should follow suit.

I would say the buyer is SOL. The most he/she can get back is the $300 face value. The seller is not responsible for the buyer agreeing to pay a "premium" for these tickets.

Must have either been BSB or NSync!

Must have been BSB. The concerts were postponed when AJ went into rehab. The tickets should be honored when the show is rescheduled. For right now the buyer should hang on to them.

As far as I know none of the NSync dates have been cancelled.

Hi Becky,

Actually N-Sync just cancelled a concert in Alabama thanks to Tropical Storm Barry dumping days of rain there. It was to be an outdoor concert and they "couldn't put the stage up".

Or so they said...Guess the fact they sold less than half the tickets the place holds had nothing to do with the decision.

edited to add: and the tickets will be refunded..they've made it clear they won't reschedule the concert this year. Considering this was the 3rd time in a year they'd been here and the ticket prices had soared to the $70 mark...as the parent of a teenage girl, I'm not heartbroken. How about if I answer with another question?

Suppose, between the time the eBay seller sells the ticket to the buyer and the actual concert, the group announces their break-up, and that this particular concert will be their last ever. At this point, ticket prices go through the roof- that $300 ticket that sold on eBay for $700 is now going for $3000.

Does the buyer send an additional $2300 to the seller?

I didn't think so.

mrpotatoheadd,

I agree, I don't think the seller can take responsibility for the concert. If you purchased the ticket from a ticket broker, they are probably not going to refund you. I think that is a risk that the buyer has to take (I don't sell concert tickets on ebay, just my opinion)

Lets hope the seller was not dumb enough to have taken payment by a online CC.

No, the seller should not have to eat it.
After all, If you buy tickets in the parking lot in front of the stadium and the show gets canceled do you get a refund? No, you do not.

Geeze- I hope the seller doesn't have to refund. If he does, there will be a bunch of Beanie Baby buyers contacting sellers for a refund.

I know what eBay would do - ban the selling of event tickets.

Sorry about the NSync cancellation in Alabama ~ I'm sure there are many little girls with broken hearts out there ...

This year I have decided to leave my 4-year-old and hubby at home. My sister-in-law and I will be taking the oldest to see NSync on Saturday. Last year Hannah was with us but it was sensory overload for her ... too loud, too many flashpots, too many fireworks .. the poor girl was scared! I felt really bad for her.

Anyone who is going beware of how loud it will be. It is not the band - it is all those little girls screaming!

Off to dig out the ear plugs ....

I'm not!

Boy, I thought concerts in my day were loud! HAH! I took her to the last NSync concert here which was in an indoor auditorium. Geez, I had ringing in my ears for days afterward and we were in the VIP box seats which filtered out a LOT of the noise!

Concert ticket prices have gotten OUT OF CONTROL, people!

If the buyer had that much money to throw around for (assumed) a teeny bopper concert then, yeah he should eat the cost.

And BTW I thought it was illegal to sell tix for more than face value, wasn't there a thread on that not too long ago?

Barbarasgirl: Unless the rules have changed it depends on the state the event is taking place in. I live in Tennessee where it is legal to sell tickets for higher than face value. I have some Tennessee Titans tickets to sell to a home game. I can sell them on eBay for whatever price I can get. Let's say I get my hands on some tickets a Titans/Jacksonsville Jaguars game in Florida where it is illegal to sell for higher than face value. I decide not to go to the game. I cannot sell my tickets on eBay. I don't know if I could sell them for a BIN price as I haven't sold any tickets since BIN came into being.

Last year I bought 4 single tickets to a Titans playoff game from http://www.openseats.com and then resold 3 of them on eBay. I paid for my 5th row ticket with the overage. It was a gamble that paid off for me but I was sweating it for a while there.

Determining a reasonable price for an entertainment event and prosecuting any who dare charge more to people freely willing to pay seems to me to be a poor use of government resources, but I suppose I could be wrong...

I was looking for tickets to Janet Jackson on eBay and found two for $150. I was irritated by this price gouging - until I went to ticketmaster and found the tix were actually $89 + ~$10 Service charge. Two tix for $150 and that was actually a loss!
