I have a Chanel jacket I'm planning to list
soon but am not sure if it is boucle, or what to call it.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

It's hard to tell. Boucle has a loopy texture, sort of like the unsheared side of a terrycloth towel, and is woven of a slubby yarn (the best way I can describe "slubby" is that the yarn's thickness varies along its length, like some of the fancier knitting wool you see in stores.) I have not seen many patterned boucle fabrics, but Chanel is not one of the designers I collect. If you have an extreme close-up of the fabric, it might be easier to tell.

That doesn't really sound like what I have, the white dots are raised,
like little loops but the navy part is flat.
I'd try posting another pic but it doesn't
seem to be working for me, not sure what I'm
doing wrong. Thanks for your input.

tootsiepop, look about 2/3 of the way down for the black and white jacket with Chanel logo buttons. It takes a while to load.

Tootsiepop it looks more like a tweed to me...when you check out the site snowegret gave you I think you'll see that.

Snowy - Thanks for the link, I can't believe how much they're selling my jacket for LOL! If I end up with a third of that price on Ebay I'll be happy-dancin' all over the house!
Zilvy - yes, I think you're right, it is more of a tweed.
Thanks for the help guys! I'm hoping to get this listed in the next week or so, we've got the kids tuition coming up soon and could really use the $!
One more question - for those of you who sell high-end clothes, do you use a reserve or just start at your minimum? Checking the closed auctions I see an awful lot that closed w/out meeting reserve. I have less than $5.00 in this so I don't have an investment to cover, but I also don't want to lose potential $ if ebay happens to go down or the bidding is really slow that week.
Hmm...decisions, decisions.

>>"do you use a reserve or just start at your minimum?"<<
We never use a reserve. We start each item at a bit of a profit (1.5 - 2.5 times what we pay for it) depending on the item. Reserve auctions don't seem to do as well.
The lower the opening bid the better chance of a sale. The prices on that web site are unrealistic IMO.

You also might mention in your listing that the **exact same jacket** is on sale on The Snob's website for $1276.00, and link to their webpage in your auction listing (unless that's now against eBay's terms, too). It will help bidders see the full value of the jacket.

outoftheblue - I think I'll just start low and let it go from there, since I have next to nothing in it I really have nothing to lose.
granee - I think links are a no-no now, but it wouldn't hurt to mention the website, thanks for the idea!

Beautiful jacket! And no, I don't think it's boucle yarn...just slightly fuzzy as in a modified mohair.
Be sure to give complete measurements. True couture clothing (even if it has a size in it) doesn't run to the same standards as regular clothing. If it's listed as a size 8, for example, it might fit up to a 12 in regular sizing. And if it is very old (say, 1950 or earlier), it will have "old sizing," which is noticeably smaller than "new" sizing.
Good luck!

Sorry, it looks like boucle to me... The white threads are quite "nubby" as mentioned before... However, I think if you don't use the accent agu for the last "e" then isn't it spelled "bouclay"? I may be wrong... Being Canadian we are sandwiched between English and American spelling, and its gets confusing....

To Cover yourself, you could just say resembles boulce.

Come to think of it... its not tweed. Tweed refers to a twill woven fabric (where weft is woven over warp alternately) and the yarn is usually two colours mixed. Boucle refers to the thread or yarn of uneven texture, and this jacket is clearly made up of two different coloured yarns (not mixed as it might be in tweed)... a navy blue yarn and a white yarn, and the texture is uneven, which is boucle... although I am still not sure how it should be spelled without the accent...

I still can't give a definitive answer even those great pix, tootsiepop.
According to this site:
www.fabrics.net it could be boucle even if only SOME of the threads are "loopy, buckled or curled."
The site also has a great section on identifying fabrics through a "burn test" (it's not as bad as it sounds. I use it all the time.)
No matter what the jacket turns out to be, I think that you would be perfectly safe listing it as tres chic.
Boucle is the proper spelling in English as well as French, by the way. When I was little I pronounced it "boockle" which amused my fashion-conscious mom to no end.

This may not help for this item, but I keep all of the throw away mail clothing catalogs that have GREAT descriptions in them to help identify clothing and fabric names. It really helps!

Thanks everyone for all your help, I think that I won't mention Boucle in the title of the auction but will in the description. I can say that I believe the fabric is boucle and then describe the texture.
