Hi Mike,

I used to insure everything that I sold. However, those little green slips were all over the place. Then I was with UPIC for a bit. Their rates are good and their service is exceptional. However, I would sometimes forget to fax my paperwork over to them..

So now I self insure. I dont state that I do that in my auctions. I just add a .50 handling charge on to the shipping fee. Most packets I send out cost 3.50 priority, so I charge 4.00.

Once in a while, a customer will send me the extra money to insure, and I will get the packet insured thru the PO. I will also insure items myself that are over $100.00. Other than that, everything goes out with no insurance.

Since I started self insuring, I have had one packet lost and one damaged. I just sent the customers their money back.
Since I HATE filling out paperwork it saved me a lot of aggravation.

Works for me, and I have never had anyone complain about the handling fee......

In over 2 years and about 1000 packages, only one ever got lost and it was going overseas. I use USPS priority with DC for almost everything and with Endicia, the DC is free. I offer insurance as an option but explain why I dont feel it's necessary. Maybe one customer in 20 takes it and I see it as an extra buck in my pocket. If a package ever did get lost, I would refund or replace it myself.

SELF INSURANCE GOT ME MY FIRST NEG.I HAD 4 ITEMS GET LOST, OR BROKEN IN THE LAST 2 YEARS.ONE ITEM GOT LOST THAT WAS INSURED FOR 100.00 IT TOOK ME OVER A MONTH TO COLLECT FROM THE POST OFFICE, AND A TON OF PAPER WORK
AND PROOF OF WHAT WAS IN THE PACKAGE.I STARTED TO SELF INSURE.IF ANYTHING GOT LOST OR BROKEN I WOULD SEND ANOTHER,OR A REFUND.TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT I SENT OUT A I5.00 ITEM THAT THE PERSON WANTED INSURED.WHEN THEY REVCEIVED IT THEY EMAILED ME AND TOLD ME THEY PAID FOR INSURANCE, AND THE PACKAGE WASNT STAMPED INSURED.I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I SELF INSURED IT. THEY WOULDNT LISTED TO ANYTHING ELSE. THEY JUST NEG ME.SOMEONE ELSE WROTE THAT IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW TO SELF INSURE A ITEM.SO NOW I GET INSURANCE IF THEY PAY FOR IT. IT IS A HASSLE TO COLLECT FROM THE POST OFFICE..I DONT KNOW

MUSICNOTES,
Loose the caps, else most folks will ignore your post.

Solution is simple: Just get a rubber stamp with the word 'INSURED' on it. No one will be the wiser....
