My computer crashed last night and all my outlook mail is GONE. Is there someplace it's hiding by any chance? I know, probably a dumb question but one can always hope.
thanks.

I use Outlook Express, and it appears that my email is in these files. I don't know if all of them are involved, or if there might be others, but it might be a place to start looking:
Windows>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook Express:
Deleted Items.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Folders.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Offline.dbx
Outbox.dbx
Sent Items.dbx

If it's Outlook98, your mail would have a pst extension. Do a tool/find/folder search in Windows Explorer for "outlook.pst".

Also try doing searches for archive.pst, *.pst, and outlook. Check to see if you have auto arcchive enabled.

may or may not help. but if you leave a copy of your server, you might be able to download it again.

When you find out where your files are supposed to be, you might want to back them up in the future.

> My computer crashed last night
Can you explain what you mean by "my computer crashed"? Did your hard drive take a dump and all your files were lost? Was there an electrical storm? Did something melt inside your computer?

sun818. it was a "mini" format. when my computer gets so screwed up that nothing works anymore I do a restore, which means I have to reload my printer driver, etc. Never have done it since I've been on cable modem, before, when I had aol it always saved that mail. Now I know better I reloaded office and that outlook and there a lot of my mail in that mailbox. I normally use outlook express. Well I have a cd writer on it's way so I'll be able to back things up. I just thought I'd seen something in here a few weeks back where someone had lost their outlook mail and ya'll told them where to find it, except when I did a search I couldn't find that thread again. So there were no .pst files, but there was that Old outlook. So I NOW know to save those important emails "somewhere" other than my outlook mail box in "case". Thank you all for your help.

Here's a site with some information regarding backing up OE5:

hi glassgrl, thanks for your explanation. It sounds like you were able to get your e-mails back. Is this true?
If not, you can read a MS KnowledgeBase article on how to restore e-mail for Outlook Express 4 or 5: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/8/54.ASP
I suggest upgrading to Outlook 98/2000 since all your e-mail is stored in one .PST (personal storage) file and makes recovery much easier. There is also an import function in Outlook that makes migration from Outlook Express real easy. Outlook has more overhead than Outlook Express so it is not for you if you have a slow computer.
Thanks.

Outlook 2000 is awesome, but you need at least a PII and 128mb ram

WOW mrpotatoheadd that was a very very nice link. I will definately spend some time over there reading up on Outlook. It even showed me how to find those danged .dbx files and maybe I'll figure out how to get them back. I got most of the mail up until a month ago, and the folder I wanted was "important emails" that I'd been saving the good stuff to.
Outlook 2000, which is where I can read that mail is a little "much" for me just yet, you're speaking to a recent AOL graduate here (still haven't found that underline key and all the goodies in outlook)
so I'll save that for next week. I'm just continually amazed at the help I get over here! Well maybe I shouldn't be but I'm GRATEFUL! thank you and for not bashing me for formating. My girlfriend who is computer literate and ususally bails me out, is off on vacation and yells at me when I format.
But now I know more than I did yesterday so I consider it a GOOD day.

As much as I'd like to take credit for finding that site, I've got to admit I read about it on another thread here on AW a while ago, and bookmarked it because it looked like it might come in handy one day. It's amazing sometimes, the things you learn reading these message boards.
