Hi All..
I'm a new Roadrunner high speed access customer and I have one huge hangup... I can't figure out how to use the free 5mg storage space that is available to me to hold ebay images. (and the "help desk" doesn't understand my needs) I used to use "my place" on AOL and just use ebay for auctions. NOW I have to pay AW to do it for me since they are hosting my images. I'm also on a Mac computer, so many of the spiffy PC helper programs don't work. Oh, and what's FTP and is it easy? Someone mentioned drag and drop? Mister Lister. AKKKKKK!!! Everytime I turn around someone else has a "fee" for me to pay. Can anybody simplify this like it was 4 years ago when I started this business???? Thanks in advance...

That doesn't sound promising. There has to be some techie out there that can help us. Seems a waste to pay BIG$$$ for the service and pay more on top of that to continue with ebay.

if all you want is picture hosting there are free sites for that. Boomspeed for example. pics hosted and auctions going - simple.

I just woke up, and can't post a decent explanation, but I'll be back in a bit to try and help. RR does have that information on their Help Desk web site as well. Here is the url for Time Warner's RR in Ohio:

I'm going to pull most of this from my RR's Homepage Help desk. I assume most of the information is the same, but you need to go to your providers page to make sure. They do have it pretty well explained there, and you could copy and paste the info to a word processor and print it out to make it easier to follow.
From their Member Services area, click the Personal Home Page link, and find the Setup My Page link. You'll be prompted to Accept their user agreement etc, and you'll need the Master Account name and password to get started. You should have that information on paperwork they left after the installation.
Next you'll need to decide what you want to call your page.
Please Note: Home Page Title is the name that will appear on the Road Runner Main Directory, representing your home page. So be sure to select a name that you feel best describes the content of and conveys accurate identification of your site.
Home Page Directory Name is your site’s URL or address. For example, if you select "smith123" as your home page directory name, your Web page URL will be: "http://home.san.rr.com/smith123."
Once you finish getting this set up, RR will email you the FTP HOSTNAME, Username & userID, Password and Web location. Once you have that information, you can begin creating your "site".
To make sure this information is current for your Provider, go to roadrunner.com and select your State and provider, and spend some time on their Member Services pages and Help area. It really isn't too difficult. Post back with your status. IF you get through this, the rest is fairly easy.

You have to use FTTP to get the pictures to your site you name your pictures and you use a url that will direct you to the page just as you would for any web pages
in my case
members.home.net/(my user name)/(picture name)
ww.members.home.net/skip555/palm.gif
I used this for image hosting when I started but it is a pain in the rear I found it well worthwhile to pay someone for image hosting for the convience of uploading and auto insertion
spock here......

Thanks to all who responded. I think I'm going to have to agree with Mrspock in this matter... I'm in this for speed when it comes to listing my auctions. I think typing the urls over and over will get to be a bit much. Thanks to all who showed me how to do it though! You've opened up a whole new world for me! (ftp sites)
Have a great day!

I don't know if it is possible with all providers, but with my RR space I can use my internet browser to "log into" my FTP space. Once there, I can "drag and drop" directly from my hard drive to the space.
Instead of typing a web address such as "http://www.auctionwatch.com", you type (in my case) "ftp://[email protected]" After hitting the enter key, a log in window pops up, and I have to enter my RR user name and the password for my web space. The browser window changes a bit, the icons and menu choices are different for FTP. I then can see the folders I've put there, I can create new ones, and drag and drop or copy and paste new pages or pictures to my space. Once I figured out how to do this, I no longer needed to use a third party program such as WS_FTP etc. It is very easy, and very quick.
overfence, just saw your post after I posted mine. I don't "type" the urls over and over while listing my auctions. I use Notepad to write my auction descriptions, using simple HTML. I usually get a handfull ready at one time, keeping a basic template to fill in details as necessary. While doing this, using my Browser, I go to my web space and bring up the picture of the item I'm listing. I then copy and past the url for that picture into my HTML. Once it is all typed up, I open another browser and log into eBay, and begin the listing. Then, you just copy and paste the contents of the Wordpad document into the description area of the listing page. If I have a bunch typed up and saved already, I can list them quickly.
It sounds more time consuming than it really is, especially once you know exactly how to do it. If you keep HTML templates you just sort of "fill in the blanks". I save them for each auction item I am going to list again as well. I can edit a photo, upload it to my space, write the description, and launch the auction in about 10 minutes, much less if the description is short.

I'm also on a Mac computer, so many of the spiffy PC helper programs don't work.
What version of the operating system are you using (you can check by clicking on the apple menu in the upper left hand corner and selecting About this Computer)? If you're running any version of OS 9, then you can use Apple's iTools (the iDisk) to get 20 MB of storage space for free.
Go to the apple web site and download the iTools installer, then run it. After you set up your iDisk, you can log on to it and it'll show up on your desktop like any other disk. You can drag and drop your files into the folders there -- I forget what the name of the web folder is offhand, but you can drag your files there to host them on the apple server. You can refer to them in your auctions as http://homepage.mac.com/~<username>/<filename>
Hope this helps!

I have been using my RR space for pic hosting for 4 years.
Get the page set up and then get the FTP software and set it up. The pictures transfer in seconds and I have never had a service outage on the hosting service.
As far as having to type the url, I just have 2 browser windows open, one the sell item page, and the other the page with the picture on it, so I just copy and paste the url as needed.
With RR I have as many as 5 active browser windows open at once.
Fetch has been around, as far back as 1996-97 .. possibly earlier. FAQ's and documentation is on their site. I'm not sure if there's a free download of it, however since you are using it for a business purpose, you'd have t license it anyhow ($25).
Once you get the info from RR as to what settings should be used, then you can easily set Fetch up and use their documentation to upload your graphics to your space on RR.
As far as finding other software that will work for your Mac.. in relation to auctions. Try Tucows and all other shareware sites. You never know what's lurking there.

I agree use FETCH. Its an easy program to use and can even store your password helping the process a lot. Fetch should be available as a shareware/ freeware program. try www.downloads.com
