I am going to take the plunge today. My new DSL has been activated and its now time to install it, but I am hesitant that I am forgetting something or something well not go so smooth. I need help from the experienced. I have auctions currently running on eBay, if I disconnect the dial-up and put on the DSl, I will need a new email address, so I guess I will need to change it at eBay, is that simple? Than I guess I need to change it at paypal as well, is that easy? Will I have access to my current saved emails, I use Outlook Express? Is this going to be simple or are there things that I am not thinking of and this is going to turn into a mess. PLEASE ADVISE.

Yes you will still have access to all your old mail, You will need to change your email address on all your accounts online includeing ebay bill point paypal anyother company you do business with.

I also recomend you dont cancel your dail up account for 30days you can still receive email from your dail up account through your DSL conection simply switch your email option for your dail up mail to check for mail from the local lan rather then dailing the ISP.

over the 30 period you have time to notify all friend family and other businesses you may have forgotten earilyer of your Email change.

Some ISPs will allow you to leave the email of your service active for $5 or $10 per month when you feel all the people you deal with know of the change cancel you old ISP email service.

I also went through a bit of a transition when switching from dial-up to cable.

I found the process of switching email addresses to be quite simple, but a bit time-consuming. But once it's done, it's done.

I switched from AOL dial up to bellsouth dsl- I use outlook express for my new email and it took a while to adjust to the new look and feel. I kept my old email address for a month after switching.

I installed everything, she is fast. I left my email settings to continue to look for the old until I can start switching everything, that seems to be working. I guess I need a firewall for protection? Any ideas?

I use BlackIce for a firewall, and I love it. Here is a link to their website...

I used earthlink DSL and I was able to keep my email address. Maybe because my dial up was also earthlink!

I use ZoneAlarm for my firewall. Free download. Works great!

Congrats on the DSL line! You will love it! I'm never going back to dial-up, that's for sure.

There's still a lot of fall-out from DSL vendors as well as some wireless ones. The high-tech marketplace is very unstable--choose your ISP wisely and I would still keep a dial-up box around. Back up is still very important with any technology. You need to be able to contact your customers and keep an eye on business if your computer goes down.

I also use zone alarm for my DSL. Don't put it off for a few days. There are too many net savy people who will see your paperwork and information for your new DSL go across their screen or desk and know the first few days are when you might be wide open.

I have the opposite problem - not by choice! It was not suppose to happen this way.
The end of july my DSL service announced they were no longer going to service my area as of 8/30 and earthlink would take over. They said new software would be here by 8/10. I set up a FREE email address and started to change it everywhere and advise my winning bidders that still owed money of the change. That part was easy.

8/10 no software...they said by the end of the month. NO software ever came. On 8/31 I had NO connection! A long weekend ahead! All day on the phone Friday with this problem. Turns out the original provider never turned me in as a switch over, nothing can be done till next week. YIKES!

Today I am operating TEMPORARILY on dial up - OH MY GOSH!- How do you people do this! I am totally switching DSL service but that takes days to happen.

I am glad I got my free email set up when I did and did not plan to switch things after.

One bounced email reported to ebay and you are NARU.
