This is a new one on me, but maybe some of you have seen it.

I was researching a book I want to list tonight and ran across an auction where the seller explained that his/her scanner wasn't working, so to see a pic of the book, please see auction #XXXX. It was a closed auction by a different seller.

Kinda cheesy, huh?

I don't report this stuff, I just thought it was amusing in a icky kind of way,

I had a widget to list one time before I got my camera. I had no other way to get a quick pic without breaking out the "ole 35". I found another identical widget on a closed auction and wrote to the seller. I explained the situation and aksed how they would feel about letting me use their pic.

They gave me permission to us it. I explained that in the auction and gave credit for the pic to the other seller.

Worked great for me, BUT I did ask permission before using it.

Yes, Ive seen that done before.
I was looking for a particular book about 3 years, that was before everyone could put pictures in there auctions.
Anyway, they put in an ID number to look at an Identical picture.
I didn't think anything of it.
I guess I still wouldn't.

I for one don't see the big deal about linking to other pics, as long as it is clearly explained that the item in question is not the item photographed.

You can link away to my closed auctions - but it isnt't wise without letting me know since I amy delete the pics to make room for others!

C'mon folks, lighten up a bit. There are people who are new and just want to dump a few items on ebay without springing for a scanner and digital camera! Lets cut 'em a break

yeah, I don't see anything wrong with this either. The seller "attributed" the pic to its proper owner by giving the link.

honaker5: I did exactly the same thing when I started out--emailed the seller and got permission to use his jpg. This was back when stealing images and text was even worse than now, and I think he was stunned. I even put in a "Courtesy of xxxx" under that jpg.

Cheesy and icky??? How about honest problem-solver?

I think the key is asking BEFORE using another person's image...and mentioning this in the description. I'm all for helping out folks but the other person DID pay the big bucks for the equipment...fair is fair.

I went one step further with my first auction.

The seller gave me permission to make a copy of her widget and use it in my auction.

I did not even know how to cut and paste at that time, or how to copy the picture, she even told me how to do it.

I bought my digital a few days later, that seller even helped me with advice on that.

Wasn't really aware I was being heavy about this.

You folks have pointed out legit reasons to do this and legit ways to do it. I guess because the seller didn't really give credit, just the auction number, I didn't think it through.

Mods, could you lock this up? I got my answer.
