Salvia divinorum -- "divine sage" -- is a plant with potent hallucinogenic properties (Salvinorin A) which produce effects in humans similar to those of peyote. Traditionally cultivated by Mazatec shamans in Oaxaca, Mexico, this plant has found its way to the U.S., AND to eBay! (A simple search at eBay for "salvia divinorum" will yield results -- check the completed auctions for high bids... they're, well, HIGH!)

Although the DEA says it's "aware" of this plant's growing popularity, at present there are no U.S. sanctions or laws against its importation, cultivation or distribution, and a multitude of Salvia divinorum websites have sprung up -- all of them selling everything from seeds to smokeable leaves by the kilo.

With eBay's long history of banning items that don't have a "community" flavor, one wonders how they let "divine sage" slip through. Perhaps the first instance of eBay being linked to the sale of this drug to a minor who had a "bad trip" will spur them to action...

Hey Pat! Long time no see.

I must admit I've never heard of divine sage, perhaps I need to get out more often?

Hope all is well with you & yours, and IM says hello. [hint-hint]

The sellers of this should thank you for the publicity. It is a legal item and the DEA doesn't seem too concerned, so why should ebay ban a legal item? They're just a venue.

Hey, kiawok, I know that masked man! Waving HI to IM...

litlux, an item's legality has seldom -- if ever -- prevented eBay from deeming it "unsuitable" for sale on its site. Guns are legal, but "inappropriate" for eBay's image.
Are you suggesting that mind-altering drugs -- just because they're "legal" (which in this case means not yet regulated) -- are in keeping with eBay's "community values"?

Very true, NearTheSea. Parents, if your teen has this pretty plant flowering in his or her room you might want to ask about it...

Have no clue who you are, NearTheSea, beyond the fact that you advertise being a fan of Art Bell. That *does* make me think of a couple folks, heh... Nice to "see" you, too, whoever you are

Go for it, soothsayer. Tell me, do you see cops everywhere, all the time, or is yours a mild paranoia that lasts just an hour or two?

Edited for spelling like soothsayer...

i don't see cops everywhere...but lets be honest here, the only reason for your post is that you were playing ebay police and seemed to be outraged by this legal item being sold....you smell like a ebay copper to me..(insert winking, red eyed smiley face)

Perhaps you need to have your thinking cap blocked, soothsayer. Dig a little deeper into that expanded consciousness of yours and see if you can't come up with another reason for my post. I'll wait...

Hello: Pat I've been thinking of the old days, and the fun times and It's damm good to see ya!!

And about that purchase I made....Well it was used for Religious reasons and no animals were harmed during that time.....Also the Doctor said it would help with my lower back pain, at least thats what the script says.

And as to the having a bad trip... I'm still waiting~~~~~Hope I did'nt get burned.

But I digress...

CVAN!!! How the heck are ya? Well, it sounds as though you at least *read* some of the disclaimers before you bought (my favorite is the BIG disclaimer that disavows any promises whatsoever about Salvia divinorum's potency, heh). Miss you, too, ya ole dawg...

Which brings me back to you, soothsayer. One hopes you read quite a bit about "divine sage" before you bought your quarter ounce. I doubt either you or I would recognize it as it grows (it's remarkably like several ornamental sages) and, come to think of it, I bet your dealer relies heavily on his purchasers not knowing what the stuff should look/smell like dried. You may have just paid $15.00 for sage, all right -- the kind one uses to season fowl before baking... about forty-five cent's worth, LOL!
Please *do* let us know how it works out for you...

Heads up on the sage alert. To be forwarned

LOL, yeah, you may have just ordered some 'regular' sage....

Now I don't see this as policing. If you had a child (child could be anyone from 13-21, sometime OLDER) would you approve of this?

Say some kid did get on ebay and bought this (hey its happened a lot, with no one the wiser) and this kid uses it, trips out on it a little too much.... now is it 'net coppin'?

plsmith.... hmmmm long ago, and far away, I remember the RT, when everyone seemed to have a favorite saying of 'Don't ever address me again' Well you told one particular poster 'Please do not undress me again' I laughed so hard, still am, remembering that one

Great news about your son, Cvan! You must be very proud of him.
Gotta work on becoming a proud Grandpa next -- I suspicion one look at your new Grandchild will be all it takes, heh...
So glad things are going well for you and, believe me, one doesn't need grandkids to feel OLD -- I'm seriously considering showering in the dark from now on to avoid the "view" ...

NearTheSea, drop me a line. [email protected]

Soothsayer, I'm not a dealer, nor a buyer, nor a cop. I *am* a fan of P.T. Barnum's, however...

I don't know...

In 1968 I smoked a banana peel & ate a can of nutmeg before a screening of "Fantasia" ... I developed a strange "monkey fixation" ever after!

Hi Ibuypaper. What does your friend consider "EXCELLENT"? Did he/she give you any details beyond that brief critique? I'd be interested in hearing from someone who thinks they have indeed gotten hold of the real thing -- if, that is, they could put their experience into more than one word...

Me, I'm thinking of selling flypaper as an inexpensive exfoliant. Who knows, maybe one can sniff flypaper, too -- anyone tried *that* yet? -- at the very least, it'd get rid of those pesky nosehairs...

Without going into details...
the 35% extract is a mild "buzz".

The really strong version is exactly what they say. Do not drive, and DO have a sober trusted friend around. Use the amount recommended and work upward from there to your "comfort" level.

Also be aware that as far as my friend could find, there is no research on short and long term negative effects of the salvia.

Ibuypaper, here's the thing: one could take two tablespoons of Nyquil and get a mild "buzz". Unregulated as this "herb" is, anyone purporting to sell it, or its extracts, or its seeds, could be selling anything, and unless one is a biochemist with a laboratory at hand, how would one know what they were getting?

The fact that there's no published data on the longterm effects of using "divine sage" makes it all the more dangerous for the casual user -- IF, that is, that person indeed acquires a stash of the "real" thing. I hope your friend will be cautious...
