Why is it that on many auctions Ive bid on Ill drop a hefty max bid on an item and within a day it suddenly gets bumped just enough to hit my max without dumping me off the winning slot And there I sit till the end without another bid. Couldnt be a coincedence .....could it or is there something happening I should know about. I think from now on Ill wait till the last hour to bid.

Is it the same person always bidding?
Do you bid on a particular seller's auctions? How about similar items all the time?

I've had this happens on items when I am the seller, no bids for the first few days, and then several within hours, and then nothing again. I think it has to do with when and where the item appears in the searches.
Of course, it could be not as innocent as that.

Its probably just the fabled quirk, It did happen on two auctions for the same item and it was the same bidder on both auctions. Could have been a shiel but who knows The other auction was a completely different item and a different bidder - I was just puzzled at how they all knew exactly where to stop bidding so Id be maxxed out ? Thanks I just needed to vent

Could just be that you both got close to the "market value".

That could very well be the case - Old sailors arent happy unless theres something to vent about.

I know that I have been the culprit of this behavior from time to time. It is purely a fluke. When I am interested in an item and make a bid, I always put my true maximum bid out there and what happens is that I will immediately be outbid by the (usually) only other person bidding. When it happens I just move on. I have often wondered if it appeared sleazy to someone. But really it wasn't anything other than my stopping by an auction, being interested, making a bid (with my absolute maximun bid amount entered), and then immediately being outbid because the other bidder probably had a just slightly higher proxy bid than I. If I was the only other bidder, then I imagine it could look like someone was trying to drive up the bidding. But like I said, when I have caused it, I can tell you that it was purely innocent.
Sometimes, it really is, just that simple.
Oh by the way......what does one do after they get the shooting purple star?..Maybe someone should start a support group in preparation for the traumatic anti-climax victims who reach that milestone. Sounds like they may need it!

I have from time to time, tried to push bids up to determine how much someone else has bid without exceeding their maximum bid. I do this for two reasons:
1.) There are several items I wish to buy but only have a limited amount of money so I'm trying to figure out what I can afford...
2.) Sometimes I may want to sell something similar in the future and I am trying to find out what kinds of prices buyers are willing to pay.
The second reason has, from time to time, resulted in buying something I don't really want but I've always followed thru on the transaction and purchased it.
Paranoia is not necessarily a bad thing...

I'm guilty of the same thing. When I am interested in an item I will sometimes put in a couple of bids just out of curiosity. If I get the item for a good price that's great. If not I move on to the next item and do the same.

outoftheblue,
I'm guilty of much worse things...
About a year ago there was always one bidder who was sniping all of my auctions at the last minute. I finally got annoyed enough that I looked at the items he was bidding on, think there were about 100 different items on which he was the high bidder. I then went through and raised all of his bids as high as I dared without exceeding them. The total amount of his bids went up from under $100 to close to $1000. I then went and bid on the items I wanted figuring that he wouldn't be placing very many more bids unless he had a lot more money to spend than I thought. I won the items I wanted, not sure how many of the items he had bid on were won by him, never bothered to check...
Auctions can be so much fun...

If A particular bidder or seller is evil with me I take my anger in a non aggressive way. I see what they are bidding on then bump up their bid the minimum amount a couple times. Often if they bid in uneven amounts I can tell what their max is.
It may be petty but it stops my auction rage.

Are you bidding even and round numbers? Try bidding odd numbers with odd change. Can you tell if there were bid retractions?

CJ I was just spreading a little mirth with the post, As a seller I truly Love it when I get early bids - If Ya throw one out somebody will usually tease it a bit. I just love Rippin out a big Homer Simpson style "Doah !" when I dont get my dream steal price - I was still pleased that I won anyhow
