Almost daily in my mail delivery, I have been getting other peoples' (neighbors) mail! Some of it looks to be very important stuff...! It doesn't matter which postman delivers in a day, it seems like none of them can read (isn't literacy a job requirement for postal delivery anymore???)

For our line of business, that's so scary!! What I've been doing so the people around the neighborhood know their important documents/packages are not making it to them directly is marking the outside "Delivered to wrong address" and then dropping the item into a mailbox (since I'd most certainly appreciate and like to know if my mail has taken an "unorthodox" route to get to me). I've tried contacting the post office about it before - it doesn't seem to be a major concern of theirs and they really don't offer any sort of solution to it.

But, then it occurred to me today as I got yet another pile of mail to miscellaneous people and started marking my "Delivered to wrong address" comment on the front, that they probably consider that defacing U.S. Postal property. Geez, go figure...!

Is my neighborhood the only one that gets these wayward postmen? Is there any recourse here? Anyone to complain to (besides this board) who might take action? Like 1-800-NOT-MINE?

I have all money orders and things that I won on E-bay get delivered to a PO box. $40 for 6 months is worth the price knowing I get my e-bay mail. Also the mailman stole a check from me. Couldn't prove it but after I complained to the postal inspector I got my old mail person back. Hmmmmmmmm

The worst is when they keep redelivering it to you.

My favorite story: I had an envelope with my address but an incorrect name. I marked through the address and the ZIP+4 encoding and wrote "reutrn to sender, no such addressee". This is what you are supposed to do according to USPS. Three days later I got it back. They had razorbladed out the window in the envelope to reveal the address, and put a sticky on the bottom of the envelope so it could be re-barcoded. I marked through the address again and the barcode again, and I'll be da**ed if it didn't come back a third time.

That's when I threw it in the trash.

I received someone else's tax refund check last year. They had moved. I marked through address and wrote MOVED on the front and dropped it in the box at the PO. 3 weeks later I get it back in a new IRS envelope!

I then put that envelope in a plain white envelope with a note and sent it to the IRS, it didn't come back that time.

When returning something to sender you also need to be sure to turn the envelope over and mark out the coding that the USPS has put on the back bottom of the envelope (it is usually pink in color).
