There are already sellers on eBay listing items related to the tragedy in NYC.
I found one listing shortly after (minutes) the towers collapsed offering an authentic piece of rubble from the twin towers wreckage.
eBay has ended many of these auctions. <sigh> I only hope these sellers are instantly & permanently banned from eBay.
What type of an ass would even consider making a few $$$ over something like this? It's only been a few hours since it happened.
(( TO the sellers of this ruthless selling practice: YOU are the salt in the wound for America today. Does that make you happy?))

I think it's ghoulish myself, and I think these sellers are without souls ... but the World Trade Center was a monument to capitalism. What's happening on eBay at the moment might be viewed as a fitting tribute to its memory.
Of course, that doesn't take into account the fact that it cheapens and exploits the tragedy being felt in so many homes tonight, where mom or dad won't be coming home from work.

Yell at them if it makes you feel better. I bet they laugh all the way to the bank. And you'll be lucky if they don't turn you in for harrassment.
Don't jeopardize your own eBaying for the sake of these idiots.

How about the guy who's auction for a twin towers postcard, started on the 1st and ending tonight - 34 bids today and price over $300. What timing!

I think you are missing the point. The listings for a "trophy" from the rubble containing the carnage of innocent lives is wrong. I don't doubt pictures, etc. will sell like mad now. I feel it's in the best interest of eBay to monitor what some "idiots" are doing. If you maintain moral standards and respect human beings, you wouldn't be spliting hairs here...

Actually, I noticed quite a few posters, postcards, etc. that were listed well before today's events. They were selling like mad.

A lot of people consider sellers of second hand stuff like us scavengers and vultures.
It's times like this, as people scramble to make a few dollars off an unthinkable tragedy, that I can't argue with them.
I live just outside New York City. A lot of people around here won't sleep tonight as folks stay awake all night in mortal dread waiting for a phone call or praying that a husband or wife, mom or dad, will come walking through the door. There have been children stranded at daycare centers, with no parent to pick them up because they're either stuck in Manhattan, injured, or dead. How do you explain that to them?
In my local newspaper this week will be the obituaries of neighbors of mine. It's inevitable.
400 firemen responded to the initial crash. The fireman's union just confirmed that at least 200 of them are now presumed dead. About 100 New York City policemen were also there within minutes of the blast. They're dead too.
All these destroyed families. All these ruined or impaired lives.
It sickens me that people are trying to cash in on it. I recognize their right to do so. But the way I see it, it's blood money. I hope they choke on it.

I have personal knowledge of someone that did a BIN from one of these tasteless sellers. I know for a fact that the buyer will be an idiot when it comes to making payment. It will require countless emails exchanged and I'm totally confident that the seller will never get anything but grief, and a negative. It's a shame because it will be the seller's first negative and they had 500+ without a single neg.

After reading a couple of the postings, I took a peek at the newly listeds. Ebay seems to be making them invalid as fast as they come on by the looks of it.
They are leaving the ones listed before today up, at least the ones I noticed.

A few sellers have taken their WTC auctions down voluntarily. One with an apology. As for the others, I can't fathom such callousness on a day like today.

Ok, here's a question. The NY and Washington papers are printing "extra" editions on the attack. Does that make them terrible or informative?
The same papers they are distributing tonight are being sold on ebay as auctions and those auctions are being cancelled by ebay. There would be nothing unusual about the auction any other time if they were auctioning newspapers of JFKs assassination, the original WTC bombing or Pearl Harbor. The newspapers will sell hundreds of thousands of copies of this paper. It's a legitimate and common item but not allowed on ebay.

One zero feedbacker has already bid on almost $8000 worth of World Trade Center-related auctions today. In the time it took me to add up the bids, his/her feedback slid to -1. Apparently, this bidder is bidding with no intention of paying.
Some of the items he/she bid on were auctions that have been up for a week -- even though these sellers who listed those auctions last Tuesday night were in no way trying to capitalize on the tragedy.

Well, sorry, but that is cool. The first time I saw it it had been ended with a Buy It Now. Seconds later it had been poofed!

The zerofeedbacker who rang up $8000 worth of sales (about 40 separate auctions, all told) was nuked by eBay after his/her feedback reached -5.
This person also left feedback for sellers whose auctions he/she bid on. In most cases it read: TRIED TO MAKE MONEY ON WORLD TRADE CENTER TRAGEDY! DO NOT BID!
Meanwhile, some of the sellers left feedback of their own for this person. The final feedback message left by a seller before the account was NARU'd reads:
xxxxx (24) : F*CK YOU douch, I don't give a sh*t the building went down. F YOU DICK

OFFICIAL EBAY WORD:
Date: 09/11/2001
Time: 18:41:33 PDT
http://www2.ebay.com/aw/marketing.shtml
***World Trade Center and Pentagon Items***
Many eBay community members have been directly affected by the tragic events that took place earlier today along the East Coast of the United States. We understand the strain that the sale of items relating to those events and the locations where they took place may place on those affected.
eBay does not allow trading of items directly related to a crime of this nature (crime scene material, propaganda, etc.). For more information, please see our Offensive Items policy.
In addition, out of respect for the victims, their family members and the survivors, eBay is temporarily suspending trading of all items directly related to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, regardless of whether the events of September 11th are mentioned on the item or in the listing. This temporary suspension will be in place until October 1st.
This is an extraordinary measure that we feel is appropriate considering the extraordinary nature of today's events and its direct affect on so many members of our community. Many of our users have asked that we take this step, and we believe that the eBay community will understand and support this decision.
Everyone at eBay is deeply concerned for the families and loved ones of those involved in this tragedy. Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families during this terrible time.
Regards,
eBay

First smart thing I've seen eBay do in years.
Now, does anyone have the User IDs of the m*th*rf*ck*rs who were selling the rubble? I have a brand new baseball bat that I'm just itching to try out.
Very few things manage to get through my cynicism, but the first post on this thread riled me up bad. When I saw the number of WTC auctions posted today on eBay, even I cried tears of disgust.

Selling rubble is sick.
Selling real memorabilia isn't problem. Or I should say shouldn't be a problem.
But it's ebay's sandbox and they can do what they want.
I know many of you will disagree and that is your right. But ebay's restricting of auctions is downright silly. If it was really a problem, people wouldn't be buying the items. But the people want them and there are people who have them.
Our free market society should continue. Else the terrorists won the first round.
