Hello,
I got the dreaded nimda virus, don't think it was from email it must have been off a website. Well it said that I should clean C:\windows\system\load.exe so I tried but couldn't, then (mcafee software) said to delete is so I did. Now when I start the computer up I get a message that says Cannot find the file 'load.exe' (or part of it's components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." Please help me. I went to the McAfee site and downloaded the newest Dat files, I have 4160 now and had 4159 when the virus was discovered. I tried to find the needed system file on the Windows 98 SE cd but can't and don't know what to do.

fonze: Often when a new virus is discovered, the anit-virus software (McAfee, Nortons included) does a very poor job in dealing with it, or documenting it.

Sounds like there is a registry key you need to delete or modify, but I couldn't tell you which one. Unless your computer is unusable in some way, dont be too concerned and just bypass this message. Otherwise, keep checking with the various anti-virus sites for additional information.

fonze: try http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=PE_NIMDA.A and then go to the free Housecall scan. It might just find all the infected files in your pc and help you get rid of them.

Good luck!

I'm no expert, but if I were in your situation I'd probably try reinstalling Windows since the missing file is a Windows system file.

By the way, I did something similar when I got the FunLove virus on my work computer -- McAfee prompted me to delete files, and I ended up deleting a couple. One was notepad.exe (certainly not a vital one but something I wanted nonetheless), and I just copied it from my home computer onto a floppy disk and then replaced it in the same location on my work computer. I'm not sure whether that would work for a Windows system file or not, though. I'd guess it would depend on whether you can find a load.exe from the same version of Windows.

RainyBear

I agree, although you will all information put on your computer if you don't copy or back it up, or copy it on a zip drive...that is the bad side of reinstalling Windows.

You can run the setup on Windows without actually wiping the hard drive clean. Just put the cd in the drive, and browse to the Setup.exe and run it. This will not delete existing data files, although you should always keep important files backed up.

Hi.
I have reinstalled it before. I'm going to wait until tonight because it takes so long. The computer still works luckily. I have a few auctions to put in later today. Have a nice afternoon all.

You have no problem.

99% of the time you get that message because your antivirus software has removed the infection but the command to load the virus that the virus put in one of your system files is still there.

Look in your win.ini file and see if there is a line that says

load=c:\xxxxxxx\load.exe

If there is just remove it.

If you re-install W98 the message is still going to come up.

Also, McAfee is pretty poor. Any test report I've ever seen recommends Symantec.
