This morning when I woke up - my balance in my paypal account had dwindled down $78.01. Paypal is double charging me for my transactions. When I first make them, they show up on my page as "pending" and they have already taken the amount off of my account balance. Now, today, all of my pending transactions are listed a second time as completed (the pending ones are still at the bottom of my account screen) and they have taken the amounts off AGAIN!

I need a toll free number! Has anyone else had this happen to them??? How did you handle it? OH PLEASE HELP ME!

Just read this on the eBay boards.

Recently I noticed an error in my PayPal account. Several transactions that were made last week (18-19th of September) were duplicated on the 21st of September. This included several hundred dollars of purchases.

I simply;

Logged into PayPal
Clicked on "Contact Us"
Dialed the 800 telephone number at the bottom of the page
Was on hold for no more than 2 minutes before customer support (CS) answered
CS asked 3 or 4 questions for security purposes
Told the the problem
2 minutes later refreshed my PayPal screen
Everything was fixed
This is the first problem I have ever had with PayPal and it go fixed in less than 10 minutes.

A+ to PayPal and their support.

You can see it here

They don't make it easy to find.

Yes.

One of our charges from the 19th showed up again on the 21st. The one from the 19th shows pending yet.
Looks like a common problem that they will work out soon.

Hopefully.

Hi- the same thing happened to us yesterday!
And worse, again today! Paypal did not answer there phone All day yesterday (had a recording that they were busy, etc) and then this a.m.the
money was back in. Then, 4 hours later, today, they took more money from a different transaction almost a $100 from eBAy...that they already took out on the 19th! We have tried to reach them by phone, and they say that they are gone til Monday! They have ALWAYS answered there phones on weekends! The ONLY thing in common is that they are all EBAY transactions... Paypal's toll free number is 888-221-1161......Can't help if this is tied to AFA somehow....and interesting corporate sabotage on either side..that of Paypal, or that of eBay, who want us all to join, and stay with, Billpoint. Mmmm.Wonder how much of this double charging has been going on , and for how long? This could be either Paypal's fault or EBay's fault...any ideas? And then to be totally unavailable? Not good.

I believe all of this is Paypal's fault. This has happened to me before, but because I was unfamiliar with the way they were charging my account, I was unable to prove the double charge, and did not report it. All of my double charged transactions are from local merchants, mainly my local post office. I believe that it is a problem with the way they have the site set up. If they are going to show the balance down after it is just a "pending" payment, then their computers should not allow the charge to be re-charged once the transaction is completed. This has been going on for a while. Just shows how shady Paypal really is. Making some money off of people who don't pay attention to what is going on in their paypal account. And not once has my paypal account ever been credited the double charges when they weren't reported. I have emailed them three times today. After going over my last month's account, my balance missing is no $85. Wonder what I would find if I went further back than a month.

Thanks to you both for the number, I will be calling them first thing on Monday, as this is a bologna! (I'd really like to say something else!)

I highly doubt paypal is trying to rip anyone off, it has happened with my bank before on debit card transactions. I have a post office transaction on paypal that is double charged right now also, I am sure they will fix it.

I would HOPE that paypal is not doing it on purpose. However, like I said before, I have had double charges that I did not report, and I have never been credited that amount. So either paypal is not doing their own paperwork well enough to know that they have more money than they should have, or it is deliberate. Either way, I do not like the way that Paypal is running their business. It is irresponsible on their part.

WHOA

Okay this is not just me then. I just went to Walmart and tried to use my Debit Card and kept getting denied. I KNEW the money was in there and I had nothing else with me. No checks, no cash nothing. I came home and looked up my balance...and it was almost $60 in the NEGATIVE...I was doublecharged for 2 transations, one "completed" and one pending on each one!!! And no one is there to answer the phones this weekend?

What do we do? I need that money to be in my account...at least I know it's not just me but?? Damon??

Hi again, This is really bizarre. Thanks for
your discussion of this. It wasn't just almost $100 (wish it was) that was just todays episode if disappearing money.
It is very difficult to calculate when paypal
doesn't have a running balance! How do they
get away with that? They are great and convenient to have, if they would do things like other banks. A running balance seems totally standard. Also, we've sent over a 100
customers paypal's way....and never got the $5..not one. Their criteria is too much, and therefore they have us advertising to everyone
"Paypal the #1 online payment method"...and then no finder's fee for us! What's $5 when they get that person to sign up and charge them all sorts of fees in the future. Some customers spend hundreds, if not thousands through Paypal, and they can't give us a $5 promised (and might I add,in our opinion, falsely adverstised)finder's fee? (Every time we call them about this, they say "we'll look into it"..and nothing...we need to hire a person just to deal with this... who can afford that and who has the time-really-to constantly chase Paypal? They do it in widdles, so that we don't get too upset. But gosh! Now it's in the 2 and 3 digits...that's getting unacceptable. And back to those finder's fees: We're all the very people that got them those customers to begin with! And with all that money, and all the technology of computers today, they can't have a running balance? We called them up over a month ago about some odd subtractions and they kept saying that they would call back and never did. Then they say finally, "oh, that's how we do it, it shows up as pending, and then it just shows completed when the item goes through"...what they don't see is that when we pay money for , say, eBay fees, the money disappears right away (as the writer above said) then, a few days later, after it is pending (and having been deducted) it disappears on the completion
end once again. Thank God we are not the only ones - they were telling us we were just "confused"...
and we're supposed to be so educated, and yet,we were thinking we were just losing our minds. Another really strange thing- as we said before- is , why are they not available to talk to ud this weekend?? They have always been available. Do you think they had to lay people off, or is it just so slow that they gave people the weekend off (and for most of Friday as well )?And finally, has anyone here gotten a $5 credit from giving them a customer?

Like I said before, I like to HOPE that paypal is not doing this on purpose. But, with the fact there is no running balance, that transactions are being charged twice, and the fact that they "on vacation" this weekend makes me wonder. It is extremely hard to prove that transactions are being charged twice when there is no running balance, so I decided to start a spreadsheet just for my paypal. However, I got a virus, and right before all of this happened to me with paypal, I had to reformat my computer and lost my spreadsheet. I really wish I could find the transactions in the past that I was double charged for. Also, does anyone happen to know what it means when it is telling me that one of my debit card transactions is "expired"? I used my card to purchase cigarettes the other day (the 18th) and now it is showing the transaction as "expired". ???? How does a transaction that only took place 5 or so days ago expire? And no, I've never recieved the $5 for referring customers. I've only referred one that I know of, but am not sure if that person actually signed up though. And I don't carry a logo in my auctions.

This isn't about the $5 credits for new recruits. I don't care about the $5 thing. All I know is when I went to bed last night I had a balance in my account and now today I was charged, again, for 2 transactions that were already deducted from my account and I am now seriously in the hole. I want this addressed and taken care of..otherwise PayPal is losing me as a customer (big diff to them I'm sure).

Mango this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I've used PayPal for a year and a half with never a problem. I keep constant track of the amount of money I have in there (I usually don't leave much so it's not hard to do) but when I go to bed with a balance and wake up without one and find duplicate Pending/Completed transactions, something smells fishy. If it's happening to so many people I woudl hope it's a glitch in their system that they are going to fix. Right now my account needs credited almost $65..that's a lot of money to me and I need it back.

yes, ths is just rediculous. I've been ran into the negative twice because of paypal's double charging, and have always been lucky enough to recieve a paypal payment the same day to recoup the negative. I never understood it before because there was at least a weeks difference in the double charging and actually had thought it was my mistake. Now, if your account is that negative, paypal is allowed to try to draw that balance from your savings/checking. This could really be one heck of a mess!

Oh mY god if they pull from my checking account I will really be in trouble it will cause me to overdraft.

Since their phone is on "vacation" this weekend, do they have rep's in the office?

I'm ready to close my account. Right now.

I'm not really sure what's going on at paypal right now. All of their phones are down. I've tried two different 800 numbers for them and the number on the back of the card. I've also emailed them 3 times in the last 4 hours, but no answers yet. I've threatened to take them to court. Hopefully they get on the ball with this crap that is going on. This is their fault, and it has been happening for a while. Normally I don't carry a large balance either. However, I need to pay my credit card off and have been using my paypal as a savings for about a week now. (My credit card's bank was located in the south tower, so I am only able to call them and do a balance transfer right now - i don't know) But when all of my money just dissappears and paypal goes on vacation, it does look awefully suspecious, i think. Very, very bad!

Another thing that does not make sence about all of this (if I make spelling errors - sorry, I'm rattled). Why would paypal even show a transaction as "pending"? If it goes through on the credit card machine and doesn't deny the charge, then it is completed the minute you sign that reciept, isn't it? If it's already taking the charged amount off of your account, then it is completed. What's the necessity of having pending and completed transactions in the first place. They are both the same. If the money's there, it's completed.

sorry, thought this was about Paypal in general...including: thewholenineyards... : - ) ....we also woke up without a big chunk $. And you might care about the "5 dollar thing" if it added up to over $500 !!! (But we can take that discussion to another thread at a different time.) You are right, we are new recruits, have only "watched" before.
However, we are long time eBay users.
But we have never been so upset as we are now
regarding Paypal/and or eBay (if it's there fault, which it sounds like it may not be) .
That's why we signed up here. We have been Power Seller's for awhile, but didn't want to get ourselves in a situation where being part of this would play against us. Anonymity has
been important. But now that we've figured out how we can speak "freely" (and without retribution) , we want to say that
it's good to know that we are not alone. Hopefully Paypal is not answering because they are working like hell to fix this thing
before Monday rolls around. But you are right, it is a tremendous pinch for those of us that really depend on it especially in these hard times.

That's also what ours is!

This looks just like a little 'bump' in the road, I'm sure that they are aware of it by now and are working to correct it. I doubt it's the end of time for PayPal......

On another somewhat of the same note.....

...last Sunday we tried to withdraw some cash from our 17 years olds savings account.(payback) We were notified by the teller that the account was $899.00 in the RED!
(funny, didn't know that you could everdraw a regular saving account)
As you can expect a trip to the bank Monday resulted in....

"Oh yes, we know about it, it has been resolved"

They would not tell us what the problem was.

I'm getting kinda used to the little bumps now.

I am having the opposite problem. I used my PAYPAL debit card on Tues 9/18 at two separate entities. One purchase for $6.31 and the other for $13.75. That same night, I noticed that those amounts were pending. They were COMPLETED on 9/21 at 10:05. Today, I log into my account and I see that PAYPAL has given me TWO CREDITS for the same amounts and locations and they were completed 9/21 at 20:22. Something is wrong here! Christine

edited to say that it looks like my 9/18 charges had expired (leaving the debits), so they recharged me $13.75 and $6.31 on 9/21 and thus the double charge. But then they credited me with the credits on 9/21, so I think I am o.k.?? I think?!?!?

imariquinn: I would bet if you check your history a bit more that you will also see that both of the transactions will be double billed , one will say completed, the other will say expired, and what you just recieved is a credit for the expired one.

I had that happen to two pendings yesterday, they were completed yesterday, yet also left pending, today they are expired with a credit given back to me in the amount of the expired one.

But I still have charges that are both completed and pending, which haven't expired so are techinically double billed.

It never used to work like this, when the debit went to completed, the pending one disappeared, but for some reason something is messed up and we are being double billed temp, so it seems and then credited the following day, we'll see, my other charges should credit in the morning, if not they are getting a phone call first thing Monday, since they seem to be closed for the weekend, which seems kind of funny to me.

paypal account ******* Damon These charges (SEE CHARGES BELOW) have been taken twice from my account. these are paypal card transactions. These transactions were deducted from my paypal balance at the time of the original charges during the week. Now in some computer glitch these charges have been taken from my account again leaving me with a $1200 negative balance. I have cancelled my paypal card because you guys cant seem to get this fixed. my business cant afford to pay twice for items. I am requesting an investigation into this matter and these funds to be replaced to my account. Please have someone call me at ***** to help resolve this matter. I will not use the paypal debit card ever again as this is not right. My paypal card was not even active when these charges came through Sept 22,2001. Sorry I am a little upset this continues to happen. This is what I am seeing. For example i make a purchase on Tuesday or Wenesday for these items and paypal oks the charges as the funds are there in the account and the funds are deducted at that time and the transaction is marked pending. Keep in mind your firm has allready taken the funds from my paypal balance on the day of the orignal charge when it was pending. Then when the transaction is completed the paypal system zaps my account again for the same funds they zapped when it was a pending transaction thus leaving me with a negative balance. I even cancelled my card so how do you keep doing this? I just want the funds replaced asap as this is not right. if you have any questions please call ******

just went and checked my account. sure enough, i've been double billed too.

looks like in changing the nice, simple method of listing the charge on the date it was charged, with a 'pending' behind it that then changes to 'completed,' they now list it twice - the original, which still has 'pending' behind it, and then a new listing/new date with 'completed.' it's very confusing, and i don't like it at all. appears that in making this change, they've got bugs they haven't worked out, and many of us have been double charged.

to my knowledge, i've never been double charged before this. i don't have any explanation for those of you who have.

i've emailed damon about it. he's always very responsive to us here at aw. wouldn't read anything into them being off for the weekend until we know what's going on.

of course i'm sure i wouldn't be quite so calm if my double charge had caused me to be in the red.

k3

oh yeah, i also had a charge marked 'expired,' then listed again and 'pending,' and again as 'completed.' never have seen 'expired' before. don't know what it means.

Everyone,

Please relax a bit. I think you will find this is a Visa/Mastercard process, to authorize and than complete the transaction. I have seen this in the transaction details of my internet bank (two account I have had over time), my local bank, my credit union, and PayPal. The Authorization will "expire", the one charge will remain, and all will be well.

I am not sure PayPal can control this.....

FWIW, PayPal announced sometime ago a change in the Support hours.

Not to be rude Coonr, but would YOU relax if the money YOU KNOW you had in your account was gone because of a double charge? $60 may seem like a small amount of money to you, but to me it's not. I can't just let PayPal take $60 and just "relax" over it.

Apparently there are a lot of us dealing with this. When things were "pending" before the amount was still taken out of the balance. When it was "completed" the pending disappeared and completed showed...and the balance stayed the same. NOW we've been charged for the PENDING AND the COMPLETED.

Sorry. No relaxing for me until I get my $60 credited back.

coonr,

some of us have unquestionably been double charged. mine have -$xx.xx after them twice. others are now in the red.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but hasn't it always been that the figure given at the top of your account page is the balance, all the 'pending' items have been subtracted. that's how i've always understood it.
