Hey, thanks for the info, CP making our lives again even more difficult!

But it will certainly help knowing this in the month before the changes come in, so I can update my eBay postage charges in my auction descriptions, I've been caught a couple of times before & had to eat the difference!

It's nice to see that the USPS is not the only ones making ridiculous changes in mail fees. Most disturbing are the international rates, which have gone through crazy increases in both Canada and the US - I know in the US, the postal service does not need any permission to raise international rates, they can make them whatever they want without fear of backlash. I suppose Canada Post is the same. I would expect a letter to cost $1 international and 70 or 80 cents to Canada next time around. In early 2001 I was paying 48 cents for a letter to Canada.

Dumb question maybe, but are all the increases listed in Canadian currency or U.S. Currency?

Hi Professor,

Those prices are in Cdn funds.

My postmaster told me today that the new rates go into effect in October - the only increase waiting until January is the price of stamps - raising one cent.

These are the rates that Canada Post charges, so they are in Canadian dollars.

For those comparing postal costs, keep in mind that we (usually) pay GST (Goods and Services Tax - a Federal tax of 7%) on almost everything, including postage .. but, there are exceptions to paying the GST on mail going out of the country - if it is/totals more than Can$5.00 in postage out-of-country, there is no GST.

All provinces, but for one, also have Provincial Sales taxes (varying rates). I believe, like in the States, it varies from province to province as to what is provincially taxable or not. I don't think any province taxes postage, but I could be wrong.

Prof,

The Canada Post site does say that the letter rate is going up in January - the 14th actually. (Vs Jan 1st last year ... gives us an extra two weeks, and the ability to get to the PO *after* holidays to get new stamps/penny stamps etc).

As for the other rates - US letter and small packet, and International letter (no mention of parcel post for any destination, nor international small packets that I could find) it says the rates are "proposed." I doubt that these proposed rates would go into effect any earlier than Jan 2002 ... besides, Canada Post likes to do everything at once

A link to the page at Canada post is in my original post ... copy and paste it to your browser, cause I never bother to remember how to make a clickable link here

FYI
I use a program called SIZELYZER that I enter lth wdth ht and wt and it calculates the postage for me.
It allows mixed entries (metric and imperial)
and takes the Cdn and USA zips and gives all optional rates/service.
They forwarded an update for new rates. AND it also gives an instany conversion to US$(the pgm allows frequant exchange rate updates as well, and I add an extra point or 2% to compensate for my packing supplies.
I highly reccomend it.(45 day free trial and then a cost of $10.00 Cdn)
