I bought these at a yard sale and have no idea what kind of fur they are. I know it's very hard to tell from the picture, but I'd appreciate any help someone could offer.
The black muff is very soft and the fur is long, I'd say about 2". It's true black, even though the picture shows brown tints.
The hat is rougher to the touch and shorter. Someone told me that might be fox?

The black is probably mink - only all-black natural fur I can think of. SERIOUSLY doubt it would be sable or fisher (the only other near-black furs I can think of). Could be DIED ... check the underfur. In black minks the underfur is greyish near the roots. In dyed furs the underfur is all the same color, and often the hide isthe same color
The grey is NOT fox ... fox is long and soft. You might have mink "trimmings" - the lower-quality, shorter fur from the sides of the pelts.

The hat appears to be Mink, the muff is too dark for me to make out. One of the popular furs used on vintage muffs was Silver Fox, which is a name given to Fox fur in a black phase with silver tips. Some Silver Foxes are pure black, and I've seen them in this pure black color phase in the wild.
Hard to say for sure unless I saw a close up pic of the muff fur.

Ziggy -
The hat is probably mink tails! Silver fox is LONG, whereas silver-tipped mink tails would be about that width and with short rather harsh feeling fur.
