Charity Auction Bickering

eBay wants to raise $100 million in 100 days for Sept. 11 disaster relief and is doing it how it knows best, via Auction for America. All involved are waiving their usual fees. However, the Auction for America has annoyed some eBay regulars. Charity auction participants are required to pay shipping, whereas common eBay practice has the buyers forking over for that cost. Furthermore, some serious merchants who use eBay claim that larger firms can flood the market with items and drive down the price for everyone. As well, those participating in the charity must use the Billpoint payment system rather than the more popular PayPal. eBay claims its the only way they could ensure all costs were waived but PayPal disputes that. It's sad how good impulses can cause bickering and discontent, but it does look as if eBay should have thought a little harder about how to go about supporting this cause.

They forgot to mention that the sellers donate the ITEM to be auctioned along with donating the shipping.

If some of these news-services would have been around several hundred years ago, they probably would have reported that the Boston Tea Party was a fancy dress affair.......

IMNSHO, the news media in this country became a dog and pony show w/little real value when the networks decided to make them profit centers instead of the public service they used to be. You want profits in an entertainment medium? You need clowns. That's why FoxNews has so many viewers - lots of clowns.

Old news. This article was written nearly 2 weeks ago.

Overall, a very poorly researched piece which does not convey the AFA situation clearly at all. And perhaps those few sellers interviewed did not understand that the reporter was not intimately familiar with the true reasons for AFA opposition, and that they should have to educate him (i.e. bring him up to speed) in addition to giving their opinions on the matter.

Well, it's the first time I've ever seen a dot-org web page display the Visa/MC logos. There's something just plain rotten here:

http://www.auctionsforamerica.org

If that's a non-profit site, I'll eat my hat.

I'd rather donate my money directly to the source than ebay. Rescue workers are paying far too high a tax at this time to put in 14-16 hour days.. our gov. makes the money on all that overtime... nice huh? should be tax free time put in.

Twinsoft,

For the first week it was up, http://www.auctionsforamerica.org pointed straight to eBay's home page, not the donations page.

20,935 as of today.

More than a couple hundred less per day so there should be only 1 or 2 items left by the last day.

100 million in 100 days????

Ooops!

>>seems that all this boards consists of is whining<<

As ebay sellers (and buyers) we prefer to call it 'venting'.
