It's there. It's a cached page from Google, just scroll and read. There is a letter from the CEO admitting wrong doings.

No No No! This is prelaunch registration. They aren't letting the general public in the front door yet. I just registered and in the email confirmation they provide links to all the content you can't access without registering or waiting until they launch.

glasshappy,

I was there for the beta testing and saw it all go down.

Click on the link and read what went on during beta testing.

Their idea of advertising is spamming the email addresses they harvested from ebay.

Well, I was a beta tester too & I for one am happy to see them come back. I'm going to give them another try. What is wrong with a second chance.

They didn't harvest them from ebay, Auction Eagle did, and Gegy turned them into their ISP and got them shut down. Thats what I read. I don't really care about all that anyway. I was just saying that the site is there and is running. When you register you will get links to the content otherwise you will have to wait until they launch.

Wheather they spammed or not, I really don't care. My email program comes with a delete button.

Auction Eagle and Gegy are one and the same. The CEO admitted as much. They didn't get Auction Eagle shut down, they pulled their own page.

Read the CEO's letter that was posted on site. He admitted the whole thing.

I read it and that's not the way I see it. Beside I don't care how they got the names, they never spammed me. They could have pulled them out of the trash as far as I'm conserned. They can't be any worse than Ebay, PayPal, Yahoo just to name a few. All of these sites have had their fair share of contraversy (hope I spelled it right).

In the current scheme of things, and considering what stands to be gained, the spam thing is quite insignificant.

So the guy ain't perfect; if he runs a good auction site that actually gets some market share, I could care less.

I was there too at the beta and the self-righteousness was nauseating.

Gegy.com harvested email addresses from eBay. They (he) spammed users. Then gave themselves a glowing review using a phoney company. Then lied about it. Then admitted it in the face of undeniable proof. And this before they even got out of beta testing. Not to mention the message board censorship.

The spam may be insignificant, but I prefer not to do business with a person I know is lying to me.

I read it and that's not the way I see it.

In order to understand what Gegy is all about, you have to read the *ENTIRE* GegySucks page, not just the first paragraph. Gegy is more than just spam. It is built on a framework of lies and deceit. (This is not just my personal opinion -- Troy himself publicly admitted to multiple lies on several occasions. And he even admitted to lying about previous lies and denials.)

1) Gegy's owner and CEO Troy MacDonald hired someone to write a spiderbot to harvest emails off eBay, and even gave them good "feedback" for delivering the evil creation.
2) Troy then created an "independent" auction news site called Auction Eagle (AE), and commissioned all the articles on that site.
3) Troy then spammed all the harvested eBay members about the AE news website.
4) AE then "found" a new auction site named Gegy, and wrote a "news" story about it.
5) The public got very upset about the AE spam, and complained loudly.
6) Troy lied about his involvement with AE.
7) The truth was discovered.
8) Troy admitted the previous lie, and then made up a new one.
9) The truth was discovered AGAIN.
10) Troy continues to cover up any involvement.

All of this factual information is proven beyond a reasonable doubt at the GegySucks page. Troy has somehow managed to remove and/or alter much of the content at the 3rd party pages referenced (such as at eLance -- the eBay of freelance contractors), but thousands of people here at Auction Watch and elsewhere saw the original incriminating content during the 8 fast and furious hours between when the GegySucks page first went live and Gegy.com closed their doors for "remodeling".

A lone web page that was not even in one single search engine killed Gegy in only 8 hours because all the evidence on that page was well researched, spelled out step by step, and entirely incontrovertible (impossible to dispute). It was quite literally a flaming crossbow bolt aimed straight at Gegy's heart -- a heart of lies. And most reasoned people thought the wound was fatal.

It amazes me that anyone can read that page and still partner with Gegy. I would sooner partner with a whore -- at least I know what the cost will be up front.

Well said toollady and stormthinker!

Gegy sent me the spam this time as well. They already had my info because I was one of the original beta testers. I was a cheerleader at the begining, then I watched it all go downhill.

When gegy died the first time, I asked that they remove all of my info. APPARENTLY they "forgot" to do that because they still sent me spam.

Lies, deceit, trechery... it's all there! I can't believe they didn't even change their name to try to overcome the stigma associated with their first demise.

A cheerleader no more, I am keeping well clear of this site. I forsee more of the same trickery as before, followed by another collapse. They'll be ok though, they are PROBABLY selling your email address as I type this, being as SPAM is their big claim to fame.

stormthinker - Thanks for taking the time to summarize! I don't know how anyone can ignore the facts and say "who cares"?
deco100 - Yes, eBay has done some shady things lately, but I don't know how you can compare. At least eBay hasn't done anything illegal. Yes they seem self-serving in a lot of the things they do, but at least they're not full of lies and illegal activity. Plus they're highly predictable!

Putting the Lies, deceit, and treachery aside for a moment it isn’t going to matter one iota what Gegy.com does (or anyone else for that matter) unless they have enough funding behind them to promote their site to the extent they can become a serious enough contender against eBay.

A good example is grababargain.com. When they first announced the opening of their web site I know many people as well as myself were very excited. There were a lot of posts here on AW hoping that grababargain.com would offer a serious venue to sell books, music, videos & DVDs. The site finally launched. The look and feel of the site was wonderful. I listed hundreds and hundreds of books.

To make a long story short for those of you not aware of grababargain.com they have 3.1 items listed on their site but in all the months I have had items listed there I sold one book, one! I eventually removed most of my inventory from their site.

This is nothing new. There are hundreds of auction sites out there. The problem is non-of them have the financial wherewithal to really make a difference. Look at other well designed sites like www.epier.com. A well designed model in fact it looks and feels so much like eBay there is an immediate comfort level there felt by both the buyer and the seller but they fall short where it counts and that is in the ability to generate sales.

Until a site comes along whether it’s Gegy.com or anyone else that has a huge advertising and promotion budget they will be just like all the rest. They’ll come, somehow they will do enough business to hang in there but they will in no way offer sellers a compatible source to sell at like eBay does. Sales are everything. It doesn’t matter how many listings a site has or how many visitors if people don’t spend their money there. eBay for all it’s shortcomings generates hits to their web site and motivates people to buy. Right now there just isn’t anyone else that comes close to their numbers. Yahoo and Amazon is ebay's only viable competition and yet as big as they are, their not doing it for most sellers.

I never compared gegy to ebay!

All I asked was, did they also lie about the millions they promised in promotions. I don't call spam mail a promotion, and I don't see any of the promised advertising anywhere.

The Colonel, I agree. No site is worth investing your time and energy in unless they can consistently bring you customers. As you said, even sites with over a million items listed still can't sell anything because they have no advertising budget.

Deco100, Long ago, far away, Gegy spammed the OAI boards and said that they had been working in secret for over a year with a team of dozens of programmers writing a totally new and state-of-the-art fully-custom auction platform. They said that they had already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars building this new paradise, and were prepared to spend one million dollars promoting it to potential buyers.

Nobody knows if they have the million dollars or not, but we do know for a fact that every other single thing that they ever told us is patently untrue. Gegy was only a few months old. There was only one owner or employee, and the other 5 or 6 people were part-time independent freelance contractors located in other countries. There was no army of programmers. All the software was generic off the shelf stuff suitable only for a very tiny site with a few thousand users -- except for their special "GegyLive" auction software which was only suitable for NO users (it couldn't even handle the math correctly). Much of the software was GPL or freeware stuff with the copyright notices illegally removed. The total documented expenditures for the Gegy project was only a few thousand dollars (about the price of cheap used car that badly needs a new paint job). And their corporate "servers" were apparently 3 or 4 generic Pentium boxes hooked up to a standard DSL phone line on a backwater ISP located in the middle of nowhere. In fact, they did not even test their software with a Macintosh before Beta launch, since they didn't own one (and it did not work with a Mac at first). So you can make up your own mind about the million dollars.

It is a widely help opinion in the OAI community that that the million dollars never existed, or that it would be generated by selling for $1 per each the email addresses of the one million eBay users they harvested.

BTW, I used to be Gegy's #1 cheerleader. I defended them then with the same fervor that I attack them now. And most of their initial converts signed up solely due to my endorsement, my words, and my support. But I don't appreciate being repeatedly lied to, used, deceived, and manipulated. Maybe some don't mind, but I do.

Ha!

I love this thread.

At least Gegy got the lies, deceit and trechary out there upfront.

I don't feel betrayed like with Ebay, PayPal and the many others.

If you haven't figured out by now, the world isn't a utopian place and Glenda the Good Witch isn't in charge.

If Gegy can produce the bidders, I'm there!

And if they can clean Ebay's clock, I'll applaud them all the way to the bank.

glasshappy,

The "spam" that everybody is talking about in regards to Gegy is *not* the posting spam on the OAI boards (which were beyond any doubt written by Gegy, and admitted to by them), but instead the millions of pieces of EMAIL spam that Gegy/AE sent out.

We are all talking about Email spam, not board spam. But Gegy is guilty of both. And the bulk of the board spam happened on *other* OAI boards rather than this one.
