Are you able to cash green US postal money orders? I goofed & forgot to ask at the PO today, just automatically bought a green one......the seller is a newbie & doesn't know either. I don't usually buy international items, so it never occured to me while I was at the PO to get a pink one.

As a general rule, NO. Some banks will accept them, but most don't (they do say "negotiable only in the United States).

We've never had a problem, and I would say we've received over a dozen this year.

--as of a year ago the major banks in Canada were suppose to stop accepting them because people were using the Green Domestic ones to 'Launder' dirty money--by sending them out of the country. The hows and wherefores are beyond me--but some banks and tellers will still take them--but legally they aren't supppose to.

What I'm told is... If your bank has branches in the US... normally the bank will take them. They just ship them to the US to be dealt with. My bank, Scotia Bank, will take them with no problem.

Do not send the "GREEN" domestic USPS money orders to Canada. They are not negotiable outside the USA. Simple as that!

Money Mart takes them anyway, for a fee of course.I never had any luck at the bank. That "only negotiable in U.S. and Posessions" thing always kinda ruins it when you are in Canada.International one work great!

Thanks for all of the replies.......It looks like the safe thing to do is cash this one in & get a pink one. I appreciate the posts

NONONONONONO Green ones.

My bank began to refuse them about 5 months ago when USPS said they would bounce them if they were presented. They do say in capital letters "NEGOTIABLE ONLY IN THE US & POSSESSIONS" in red no less but I still get at least 2 a month sigh.

Why can't they just issue one type, good anywhere especially for my US customers who agree with Al Capone who once said
"I don't even know what street Canada is on"

Ditto the no no no to the green/domestic US postal money order to Canada.

You will probably find it cheaper to get a money order from your local bank, convenience store, gas station etc - at these places the money order does not specify itself as domestic or international, but is just a US $ money order drawn on a US bank - very depositiable/cashable in Canada (Canadian banks accept money orders drawn on US banks - unlike US banks that won't accept anything &/or charge fee to accept anything drawn on a bank outside the USA). I believe that the US Post Office money orders cost about $3.00 ... you can get a money order at Walmart for .50 cents to a $1.00 I believe.

I'm confused here. I'm in the US - my postal worker told me that there's a reciprocal agreement w/Canada to cash Postal MO's. She mentioned you could lose/gain a few cents if the exchange rate changed between when the MO was purchased and when it was cashed. This was her response when I told her I only took Intern'l MO's even from Canada.

Reciprocal generally means "you do me I do you," so I'm thinking maybe your seller could call her Postal Service to get a fersure answer?

Yes, a reciprocal agreement to cash the cashable US post office money orders - ie the international ones. The green domestic ones are clearly marked "Negotiable in the USA and its Possessions Only"

sadie ...... Your PO clerk is correct, but for the most part Canadian banks will no longer accept the 'green' Domestic USPS MO's, and instead require the 'pink' International USPS MO's.

Wasn't it the Fabulous Poodles that sang "Think Pink"?

As I say.. I normally get around 40 of these a week... and NEVER once had a problem cashing them at the bank.

Al Capone who once said "I don't even know what street Canada is on"

A few years back, construction workers in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan found a network of underground tunnels - a hideout of Al Capone's!

I have cashed 100's of them at the Bank of Montreal.

I know another seller who cashes them at the CIBC and on and the Toronto Dominion.

In fack in my emails to buyers I say
"No need for International money orders the Green USPS ones are fine"

Typical Canadian banking--front page news a few years ago but how they wouldn't be accepting them anymore and now it appears they are again. Must have filed the memo.....under G for Garbage

CIBC in downtown Toronto has been refusing the green ones for over 6 months and they are accepting them in other areas of Canada ?????!!!!
(excuse me while I bang my head against the wall for a few moments) The huge hassle I have been going through mailing back the green ones, I may have to go crazy on them.
And this of course will have an enormous effect (NOT)
