I have a reeeeeeeeaaaal important bid that needs to be placed tomorrow and I may not be able to do it myself, and bidding early is the LAST thing I want to do.

The reason I bid as late as I possibly can is because there are several fellow collectors who DO NOT bid the most they are willing to pay in early bids. They typically need a bidding war to start before they dig deep. So, the only way to avoid encouraging this is to NOT give them any excuse to up their bids.
You would think these guys would not want to entice each other into bidding more with hours left before the auction ends, but they do it every time.
Whenever these same bidders are not challenged early by another bidder, they generally lose with a much lower bid than I see them place on similar but contested iems.
This is a fundamental example of why bidding early makes NO SENSE at all. Granted you get a bid in, but you likely end up paying one heck of a lot more for the same item.
I only snipe. No item is worth me wasting my time by bidding early for something, just to lose out to someone caught up in an emotional bidding war.
