Yesterday morning was the first and last time I use ebay's picture service.
I read some other posts that mentioned something called an activeX download as being the cause of the virus and necessary to use the service.
I was asked to down load something with "flash" in the name when I tried to use the service, but I clicked no and didn't download anything that I know of. I was still able to upload a picture.
What is activeX and can it download automatically without my knowing?
I used the virus program posted at ebay and it said there was no virus on my computer.
I've use boomspeed and AW to host pictures, is there a danger of contracting a virus when uploading onto any picture service?

Basicly it's a way for a remote site to run a program on your computer.
If you have the settings on your computer set up right, it should prompt you befor downloading something like this, but if you ever checked the box that say "always trust downloads from this site", yeah, it could happen.

Not much of a chance at this point, but the punks that write these worms are always looking for other ways to spread the stuff around. The only 100% sure way of never getting a virus is to not have your computer ever hooked to the internet, and never place a disk in it.

ActiveX controls are software modules based on Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) architecture. They add functionality to software applications by seamlessly incorporating pre-made modules with the basic software package.
Modules can be interchanged but still appear as parts of the original software. On the Internet, ActiveX controls can be linked to Web pages and downloaded by an ActiveX-compliant browser.
ActiveX controls turn Web pages into software
pages that perform like any other program launched from a server.

Active X is BUILT INTO MICROSOFT SOFTWARE! And it is enabled by default, just waiting for a virus to use it. Unlike Java, which was built with pretty solid security, Active X is what security consultants call "promiscuous" ... it's fast, cheap and easy and will let anyone who knows the right commands do whatever they want.
You have to open MSIE and OUTLOOK and deliberately disable Active X controls. Of course, that means that you can no longer use IPIX, but there are better and cheaper picture hosts out there.
