I bought a small item that was around $10.00. The shipping is $4.00 plus they want an extra $1.10 for insurance. I don't need the insurance as the item is not breakable and if it gets lost, I told them I would be responsible. They still insist on me paying for insurance, which I don't need. Obviously not the $1.10 that bugs me, but the fact I just don't want it. Have you had this happen?

Did the auction state that insurance was mandatory? If so, you have to abide by the auction's terms. If insurance wasn't mentioned in the auction, I think you should be able to pass on it if you don't want it.

Hi EG,

Nothing was mentioned in the listing. I already paid her the $14.00 through Paypal. Her email stated $14.00 w/o Insurance or $15.10 with. I chose the $14.00, paid her, then got the email for the extra $1.10. Like I said, it's no big deal, but I don't think it's fair. I'll email again and see if she'll re-think this. I've just never run across something like this....!

Hi ~

I would think especially since she gave you the option of with or without insurance, she wouldn't give you a hard time if you didn't want insurance. Hopefully she'll just let it go without insurance.

Did you pay with a credit card? Perhaps the seller is afraid you'll do a chargeback if you don't get the item.

I agree: if the seller offered insurance as an option then it is bizarre to insist on it.
I do however state mandatory insurance. In the few cases where a buyer has worn me down to ship uninsured, these are the first ones to demand that you refund for lost or damaged items, no matter what they say initially. I just won't ship uninsured anymore and if the deal tanks oh well.

I've had several problems with people using PayPal and not wanting to pay for DC or insurance, then claiming it never arrived, so now everything goes UPS if you pay with PayPal. UPS has built in DC and insurance up to 100.00 and only .35 for every additional 100 dollars of value.

If they gave you an option they shouldn't make demands after the fact.

The buyer could do a charge back whether the package was insured, had delivery confirmation, or hand delivered. They can do a charge back for any reason as well, the credit card companies just process them.

If nothing was stated in the listing that insurance was mandatory, I would tell them that you will get the money back through paypal if they do not ship at the price quoted. If it is not stated as mandatory, then it is not mandatory. It is always the seller's responsibility to get the item there whether they request insurance be paid or not.
