From the Announcement Board:

***eBay Recognition Program Pilot***

We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new pilot program: the eBay Recognition program. This is a special program designed to acknowledge the dedication and hard work eBay buyers and sellers display every day.

The program is based on a member's feedback score. To be eligible for the program, members will need a score of 10 feedback or greater. The program will begin today as a pilot to 100,000 members.

Everyone with a feedback score of 10 or greater will be "grandfathered" into the program over the next month. The program will officially begin in a few weeks; we will post more information closer to the official program launch.

Regards,
eBay

Anyone want to take a guess what this is all about?

Good question, can they possibly be more vague?

Could it be that they will recognize
sellers and buyers who participated in the AFA auctions?

Maybe 100,000 sellers and their buyers are being launched into outer space?

They are training sellers and buyers how to pilot airplanes?

Buyers will recognize their fave seller and sellers will recognize their fave buyer?

Meg and her dog Naru(who bites!) will be ??? to/with sellers and buyers.

Since when is feedback a score? And all this time I thought ebay was a business, not a game.

My grandfather and other deceased grandfathers are going to arise from the dead to pilot me to ebay recognition school where I get to settle my score with ebay?

Huh?

Already been notified, we just achieved a new "star" color and they send a nice little HTML e-mail with little cheers and recognition.

Whoppity Do dah!

I feel so privileged. I would like to thank the academy, God, and Mistress Meg.

Oh, goody. Do you think it's possible that we could get our own special stuff like bumper stickers, rings, letter jackets and other exclusive club stuff? After all we will be in the elite ebay club! If we do the walk and talk the talk everyone will want to join the ebay club. More money for Meg-but that dog Naru-he sure likes to bite!

Maybe they'll do something like the video rental stores.

For every 100 feedbacks you get 1 free listing!

Can't wait to see what this latest idea of theirs is.....

? Perhaps something to help blend the Half.com feedback into the eBay feedback?

I got the e-mail and here it is. Guess what I found when I went to the link in the e-mail (see below)? Answer is after the e-mail text...

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

To: me!
Subject: You deserve a special thank you from eBay
From: "eBay" <[email protected]>
Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 14:15:50 -0800

CONGRATULATIONS me! ON EARNING YOUR YELLOW STAR!

To thank you for your support of the eBay marketplace and your dedication in obtaining feedback points, something that's integral to the success of the marketplace, eBay proudly initiates a new Recognition program to commemorate users receiving their Feedback Stars. As part of the program's first phase, eBay is sending out this thank you to everyone who has already attained a star.

Reaching your first Feedback Star is an especially significant milestone that most users always remember! We at eBay would like to congratulate you on achieving a Yellow Star.

To access the program, just go to http://pages.ebay.com/community/recognition/index.html.

Again, congratulations.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, I get there and you can buy "special" items such as the commemorative coin with the eBay Values and t-shirts (both customizable and regular), hats, and such from the STAR STORE. With stars arond the word ebay. Prices are about the same as their usual store. But here is the "club" part. The shipping is free and no sales tax. But since I only have feedback in the YELLOW range, I can only buy up to 4 of each item. The items you see are based on what your feedback level is.

Oh and you get access to special offers such as AOL, DirectTV and Time magazines. The usual advertising stuff.

I thought it was a funny e-mail since I am only a few away from my next star...

Exec Girl - Thanks again for keeping me informed. I have learned to count on you keeping me up on things! Thanks a bunch!

I will not even begin to imagine what this is. I know what I would like it to be......

A notification of FLD days
Free listing on your ebay anniversary
$1.00 per feedback in a month off your bill

I GOT IT! They are going to attach your colored star as mouse tails, so everytime someone clicks on your auction the stars will follow them around. Chasing them away!

Click the AFA flag logo and then click on contributors. Community Recognition. Wonder if that is what they are talking about.

I have the same problem here jake - my eBay ID IS an email address.

Is this supposed to encourage sellers NOT to use an email as their ID? This would further the creation of the "no customer contact" scenario like Half.com.

It could just be a bug - but why is it that everywhere else on eBay, an email address is fine?

Also, I understand the friday morning downtime for Star Recognition, but what's up with "Sundays from 8 PM to 8:05 PM PST" as a downtime? Is there only one guy running the store on Sunday night, and when he takes a coffee break, he quits serving customers for 5 minutes? Seems strange and arbitrary to pick that 5 minutes, or any 5 for that matter.

Well, I have said it before and now it's time to say it again.

Everytime I hear of another 'feature' or another 'program', like this; I feel like it is time to bend over and assume the position, cause here it comes again!

And then another thought runs through my mind...... at least back in my sexy 20's (more years ago than I care to remember)you could at least expect dinner & a movie before getting XXXXXXX !

How about a free bumper-sticker? Mine would read,

"I paid eBay $100,000 in fees and all I got was this lousy bumper-sticker!"

With a big eBay logo on it.

This is too funny (and pathetic, but what else could you expect from Ebay?)

maymaylau: Thank you for posting that email. I entered my info and it says I will receive a star pin, a "personalized" (aka:CANNED) letter from Meg, and something else... can't remember now (too early in the morning and it couldn't have been very significant). I was so excited I was doing cartwheels and backflips. NOT.

RichieRich: Glad I could be of help And I would also like to see the benefits that you outlined in your post. Maybe you should email that to ebay as suggestions

Twinsoft: LOL at your bumper sticker idea! LOL Where can I get one of them????

I wonder if there is a difference between feed-backs that say "great item, fantastic packing & mailing, wonderful ebayer", vs. "got the item". Also, does 12 positives and 2 negs qualify?

With a 7400 plus rating I am able to get a pin and a white T shirt apparently for free. But of course when processing the form it said it could not find one of the items (the t shirt). Thanks Ebay - after sending 1000's of dollars in commissions to you -- I am able to get $6.00 in free gifts!.

You have to have more than 10 feedback AND a non-email eBay ID.

Wanna make a wager that not allowing email IDs to log on isn't a bug but a plan? Marie's got 50k feedback, but she can't log on to the "Recognition Program", till she changes her eBay ID or they fix a log on bug (if you really think that's a bug.)

Another pitiful and pathetic d.o.a. sales promotion by ebay people who have no idea of what works and what doesn't.

I personally find it insulting that they think that stupid pins and tacky t-shirts are the way to improve seller loyalty.

Good grief, shouldn't some of this excess energy be directed at solving the real problems? Just read the many AW threads about technical and policy problems to find a hundred ways to improve ebay and make sellers like me happier, more loyal, and less contentious.

OK, all, as the resident video store owner I must clue you in to our reasoning:

Rent 10 videos get one free means you will probably only come to my video store so you can earn that free rental which turns out to be a catalog movie rental anyway

So ... in thought they are hoping many people will not pick up on what this program really is .... a chance for Meg to sell a gazillion tee shirts ... and at $12.95 a pop? That is a really good profit margin for her .. 99 cents shipping ... she should be paying less than $2.95 per shirt at the volume she is buying .... if that is screen printing ... monograms slightly higher

$12.95???? I am in shock! MEG QUICK! CALL ME! You are paying too much!!!

Bend over, eBay sellers

The design is really cute, though ... kudos to the artist. What bothers me is where is the tag? It has been cut out ... and nowhere does it say American Made tee shirt. There is a HUGE difference in American and foreign tees in this industry.

Now, let's figure this out ... I can be well dressed with my new shirt and hat for $27.90. Free Shipping. Totally personalized for $50.90.

AND the best point for eBay ... everyone who buys a shirt immediately becomes a walking billboard for eBay. So .. you have just paid eBay to advertise them. BUT she has given you free shipping, albeit after she charged overinflated prices.

I have been studying at great length marketing for my new store. I must commend the PR staff at eBay for this one. By saying your can "only buy" x amount of items wants you to be able to buy more. It's a psychological thing.

Now, the question is .... will I buy any of this stuff? Of course! It is guaranteed to put a smile on my Mom and Dad's face ... and I would spend all that I have for that right now. So, it really comes down to emotional purchases for me.

Please excuse me while I bend over ...

BECKY

BTW, Marie, I would love to know how many items you are allowed to purchase

NOTE: For those who do not know, I own the oldest screen printing company in my town ... my hubby is a commercial artist.

Wow, a pin, a letter from Meg, and a certificate of accomplishment!

What I really want is a new water jug from them. A few years back, I established an advertising relationship with ebay (This was before they went public) and they actually paid me to advertise at my web sites. They sent me all sorts of stuff, it was pretty cool. Then, they got mega big, and literally moved on without telling me. Thank you, Ebay!

Well, here is the REAL reason for this program, take a look:

https://www.ebayrecognition.com/ebayrecognition/html/specialoffers.html

It is to get us to spend our money with ebay on fun stuff like magazines and direct tv. Wow, how creative, Try to sell this stuff by telling people they won an award, to make them feel special, so maybe they will subscribe to a magazine or who knows what else.

Back in the good old days, when web sites had tons of money floating around, they would send out all sorts of goodies....

I am in the affiliate program of dozens of companies.

Amazon sent me a mug and a $20 gift certificate. Pets.com sent me a t-shirt. eToys sent me a baseball cap. eMerchandise sent me a mug and a pin. CDnow sent me a t-shirt.

eBay... They've never sent me anything!

On the opening page for this program under Contact Us, the following is stated:

"Still have questions? Click on the button above to contact the Star Recognition experts who can give you all the answers. Also, we welcome your feedback on the program. Use Contact Us to give us your comments and suggestions. Thanks!"

How would you like to have a title of "Star Recognition Expert"?
