When I get an "Instant Payment" for an auction item won with Paypal, they state the "amount" at top, then "total shipping" beneath it. Does anyone else find this confusing? I guess the "amount" is the winning bid PLUS shipping (?)

with billpoint instant buy it now, shipping is stated on a separate line, other than that, seller will email buyer after end of auction on shipping charge.
or if seller has included shipping charge in item description, high bidder can add that to bid amount.
if you are the high bidder, you must know how much you bidded.
