Not a "phoney" one, but I did get one where some clown at a quick stop store was scamming money, and not turning in the money from money order sales, and it came back "payment refused". The buyer made it good (he told me he got "stuck" on three of them), and I think someone went to jail over it.

I got a $200 one a few months ago. It was deposited in the bank and about a month later the bank took the money back when the money order was returned by Western Union with the notation "Amount Altered". Never could find out what it was all about. I also had a stop payment on a bank money order a couple of years ago. Money orders from banks or credit unions can have a stop payment order put on them just like a check.

They are out there. My Post Office always checks postal MO from a checklist to make sure its good. And I've had one money order "bounce" at my bank.In fact , my bank warned me that a money order is just like a personal check , do not assume that it is cash. A lot of people make that assumption.

I think a lot of the problems with bad checks, chargebacks and money orders is the type of merchandise you are dealing with. There's always someone trying to scam when it comes to certain kinds of items.
