My friend inherited this piece and we can't quite figure out what it is....Measures just about 11" long...The bottom piece looks to be some sort of bone/tooth, but I can't be 100% sure...The top piece opens and a wick is just inside the cap, this top piece also swivels. Any ideas????
TIA

Maybe used to melt the wax for letter seals? Just a total guess though.

LOL
Maybe a fancy night light for going to the privy in the dark?

Perhaps an ecclesiastical item used for lighting candles in a house of worship?

It is a parade torch or lantern and was used by many organizations in the 1800's.

heygrape...there's a thread you should check out in the Round Table!!!
Loosecannon, yeah, I was thinkin' some kinda torch light....
DrTrooth...the "house of worship" would explain the strange design, but it would be very difficult to actually light a candle with it, as the top swings, so as you held it to the candle the wick/flame would be straight up...
Thanx folks.....
Any other ideas?????
TIA

I still have to go with my first thought because it really looks like a desk accessory item. I will do some more digging.

I do believe you've got it, newguy!...Thanx!...I found the auction for a similar item. Although decorated quite differently, the mechanism appears to be the same. Will have to check into parade torches to find out the approx. date/organization for my friend's. I would suppose that given how fancy it is, it was probably from a specific group...
Thank you all for your help!!!...If anyone wants the auction number, email me at [email protected]

Sorry about the auction# Marty,
Rancher,
You have a very fine old parade torch.
Our victorian forefathers really loved night parades. Sometimes for political purposes and sometime fraternal. Fireman also used parade torches.
A google search will reveal a lot more.
