I recently picked up a great old vintage Rollfast tandem bicycle. Can anyone tell me if this bike can be shipped without a box? Maybe tagged and picked up?? I am anxious to list it but have my doubts weather I will ever find a box that large. Any replies will be appreciated Thanks, micmic66

I don't know if you can ship without a box, however, there are BICYCLE boxes available. My dad was traveling out of the country and wanted to take a bike with him, and so he got such a box! Check with the PO and UPS to see if they'll take it without a box, but you will need to consider the amount of damage they will do to it and then, they won't be responsible as it didn't have any packaging around it. (in other words, they'll blame you....)

1. Place Person 'A' on the front.
2. Place Person 'B' on the back.
3. Point the front of the bike towards it's destination.
4. Start pedalling.

You can always use the old "buyer to arrange for, and pay all shipping costs" routine. I am almost certain that most carriers will want it in a box or crate. It should also be cheaper to ship if you can compact its lenght by taking it apart. A tamdem bike should sell fairly well, I would try an ad in my local paper first.

Just sell local on ebay
I did this last year with a large full size vintage vanity .... was very, very heavy, didn't want to have to move this myself and knew I could get a ton for it on ebay but stated on auction that *** I was only selling to someone who could come and pick it up, said that I would not arrange delivery !
It worked ... sold within 2 hours.... buyer came 5 hours from upstate NY ( I am in Philly ) paid me cash and took it away ~~ yeah !!

I would call some local bike shops and ask for advice I imagine they ship bikes back to the manufacturers and assist customers who are moving.
spock here......

Why not try and sell it in your area. There must be some bike clubs. Or maybe even some husband and wife that want to spend quality time together without the children. Just think no listing fees, postage or feedback just plan old add in the newspaper. You don't even have to have a seller name or give your credit card. How easy is that.
Another way is to ride it around and put a forsale sign on it. Should get some hits with that. Well, seriously I hope you can find someway to sell and ship your bike. Good Luck

mrspock is on the right track. I've gotten some great boxes from the 2 bike shops in our town. See if you can't introduce yourself to the owner of a bike shop in your area and ask for tips (and boxes) on shipping. Who knows, maybe s/he'll know of someone who might want to buy it!
Keep in mind you'll probably have to break it down some to ship it. A tandem bike would probably take 2 boxes total. The bike boxes are designed exceptionally well. They are rectangular, 6-9 inches in depth, with hand-holes on each side. Very, very sturdy and sized for USP I'd expect.

We had a large old bicycle we sold last year and shipped it across country. We partially disassembled it with the new owner's permission, and improvised our own box in order to pack it well. Ended up having to ship it by bus and it was picked up at the new owner's bus terminal in town. The cost was much cheaper than any of the other ways. Hope this helps! Something to check out when shipping large items, too.
