I have an item closing tonight that is being purchased by someone in Mexico. He e-mailed first and asked if he could bid. I agreed, but told him shipping would be higher, etc.

I've ship to Canada, but never south of our border. Any suggestions or tips on what to do or not to do?

All I know about sending mail to Mexico is that 14 years ago I had an exchange student from Mexico live with us for a year, and after she went back home I would send her letters etc., some she received and some she did not. She said their government is quite corrupt and that if the postal employees suspect something good is in the mail, they take it. (Happens here now too, I guess.)

Anyway, any pointers would be appreciated from those of you who have mailed auction items to Mexico. Thank you in advance.

I've had nothing but bad luck shipping to Mexico. The Mexican postal service is horrible and they lose packages.

It's very expensive to insure packages to Mexico or send Registered mail. Global Priority Mail is inexpensive, but they won't insure Global Priority Mail to Mexico.

I won't ship there anymore unless the buyer pays for registered mail. Two lost packages were enough for me.

Your luck may vary...

The additional problem you face is that Global Priority isn't available for every city, one the biggest ones.

And the insurance rates will leave you breathless.

I recently shipped one to Mexico. At my suggestion, it was shipped registered mail - the buyer gladly paid the extra $7.50 or so.

We were starting to become concerned that package was lost, but I got word the other day that it had finally arrived. It took 29 days to get there.

Thank you everyone who shared their experiences mailing to Mexico. I knew it was iffy on them receiving the item.

Before I granted permission for him to bid on the item, I asked his preference on a shipping method and added that after I mail the item and have my postal receipt that I no longer am responsible if he does not receive the item. He agreed and bid.

I think I will go with the Global Priority Registered mail. Thanks again.
