On occasion, I share the stories of some the great ebay sales I've had. These stories might involve the purchase of an item at a relatively modest cost, and selling it at a handsome profit.
Some people are amazed at the amount of money a person can make from ebay. I tell them it can be made on the right items.
After telling them about a couple of different items, I always seem to get this question from them, in a somewhat disgruntled tone. Do you have to pay taxes on that? I always wonder why they would have the need to ask that question. The only time a person asks a question is when they are seeking information they feel they have a need for. Example: When you're lost in a strange town, you stop at a gas station and ask for directions. You then use this information to find your way.
If I said yes, or if I said no, they wouldn't really feel any different about these sales would they? I think the reason they're asking is they may be slightly jealous of this income. My answer to their question is that I file a schedule C for my taxes. Judging by their facial expression, I think some don't know what that is.
Do you ever encounter people who ask the "Do you have to pay taxes on that?" question?

I've never had a customer ask if I pay taxes. However, the wife of one of my hubby's co-workers, is absolutely jealous of me. She hates that I have my own business. I heard her hubby whisper to her, yeah she doesn't pay taxes either. Oh did I set him straight! He is such a jerk!!
