Although my experience in the world of antikes and corruptibles is limited, I'm pretty sure that that is a:

Native American Marital Aid ??

OTOH...I could be wrong!

American Indian either a Hopi or Kachina (sp) doll or figure. Taos, is Taos N.M. And there are lots of Hopi's and Pueblo Indians there that make articles like this and sell to tourists or specialty shops.

Thats the best I can do, as I have seen them in person and know a couple of artists in Sandia.

Thank you for all your help. Figured something like that but being from northeast I am ignorant about it. Had no idea what to call it!
Was in a hurry and just uploaded pics from disk w/out editing, sorry about that - hate it when pic's are in an auction like that.
And NO WAY did I pay that price, it was left over from an auction and I got it with some other things from the pile for the dumpster.
Maybe I'll try it on eBay and see what happens...

I love the answers so far and mine is a bit boring, but a little net reasearch using google.com leads to:

1. There are Hopi Kachina, Navajo and Zuni dolls also. What you have would take an expert to determine.

2. here's a link to Hopi dolls:

http://www.hopimarket.com/Kachinas.htm

You'll notice some of these are pretty spendy - in the hundreds of bucks range.

3. There's a mark on the bottom indicating this was turned on a lathe - that I would guess limits it's value and dates it to 20th century.

4. Those feathers look like finest quality chicken.

5. The signature mark might be worth sending to one of the galleries you can find through google or whatever search engine you got.

Best hope I would think is that this is the signature of a famous artist in his/her childhood or on an off day.

Thanks for the pictures though - very interesting and definitely worth listing as Kachina Doll I'd guess.
