I have a buyer that sent a personal check (eleven days after auction closed) instead of complying with my terms of payment. The check is a very low number, maybe new account...I notified the buyer of sending check instead of my terms of payment with the option of sending M/O for faster shippment. Buyer was informed of ten days clearing of check..No response back..At this time he has 5 negs. All NPB..
Should I send the check back or complete the transaction??? Sorry this is so long....
Any advice will be appreciated....
Thanks
Pat

I would just wait till the check cleared, then send the goods.

Could be that the bidder is scared that they will get the boot, and now wants to suck up.

Thanks for your reply...I was considering this option, but doesn't the bank charge about $ 25.00 or more for returned checks??
If so,not a very profitable transaction..

ugh.....

ebay bidders do not read,if his check bounces, you will pay your bank a fine.
of course he will have to pay a bigger fine to his bank.
why dont you wait for him to answer your email first?if he does not answer your email, you have to wonder how good is his check??

I believe you can call the bank and see if there are enough funds to cover the check. Should be a phone number on the check. Won't cost more than a buck to call. Depending on the amount of the auction and the perceived desirability (like the number of bids), you could return the check and ask 'em to shape up or ship out.

Hi,
If it bounces your bank may charge a small fee (about $3). Most stores charge $25 for an nsf check simply because of the time/money it takes to collect on them-- but at least your bank probably won't charge you more than a few dollars if that does occur.
I would wait to see if he replies.
Another idea would be if the bank it is drawn on is a national one (and in your town) why don't you take it to a local branch and try to cash it there. That way you would not be taking a risk. Still trouble I know-- but better than no money.
Take care,
AT

Some do some do not. Rates can vary bank to bank.

However at this stage we do not know if the check is bad or good.

Only one way to find out. This is your call.

You could insist on a M.O., but if it took this long for them to send a check, how long for a m.o.?

At this point I do not think you have that much to lose by giving it a shot.

Let us know how it turns out.

"calling the bank"

I considered this also...But even if they say it will clear that day ,doesn't mean it will by the time this check gets there. BTW, bank is in NY.. Not one I'm familiar with..

I feel this is so petty of me, but the buyer didn't except my terms of payment..

I have considered e-mailing a seller that has collected from this buyer and ask if buyer paid by check.. What do you think ??
Is this going to far?

I'd deposit the check and wait. In well over 2300 transactions I've had only 2 bounced checks and both were made good. Personally I take payment in any form...Checks, MO's, PP, BP, cash, gift certificates...whatever is easier for the customer.

when a check bounces, buyer bank assesses a fee on buyer-which could vary from 15-35 dollars.
seller bank could also assess a fee on seller from 3 to ??
now if the buyer writes a check from an account which has been closed, there is no way the bank can slap him with a fee,but he could be in trouble with the state .
dont know if that applies to check sent out of state??
try emailing him again until he responds.
