With the absence of the words "first edition" is there any other code that can help me decipher if my book is a first edition?

I know, it's MHC and they are a dime a dozen but it is a signed copy. I would assume that a signed first edition is worth more.

a dime a dozen? I happen to like MHC books and would gladly pay a quarter for a dozen. Just kidding..although I have read most her her books and they're page turners if you ask me.

It appears to be a first edition. The "number line" gives it away - if the number 1 appears in that line, that generally indicates a first edition. Likewise, some books have a "letter line" where the presence of the letter A indicates a first edition.

holdenrex: Thanks for your help! A friend gave me two boxes of books this weekend and this was in it. Nothing to lose but the listing fees but I wanted to make sure I listed it in the correct category.

I have found some comprehensive resources on the WWW that reveal how each publisher indicates First and subsequent printings and editions. Unfortunately, I can't find the link to whatever the resource is (was). It might have been Bibliofind before Amazon gobbled it up. Luckily I downloaded the file and if you want, I can email it to you (or to anyone else) - just don't sell it because it is probably someone else's "intellectual property". Send me an email ([email protected]) and I'll share with you.

There is a helpful glossary of book terms available at Alibris (www.alibris.com). And of course, a Google search might turn up a few others.

You have a first, and depending on condition is valued in the $25-$50 range. The most obvious category to list it in would be First Editions>Signed>Fiction, but it may behoove you to list in the Fiction>Mystery category to reach your largest audience. Collector's would most likely find you through a search for "signed". Then again, you could cover all your bases by listing in two categories.
