I've been thinking about this for awhile and
would appreciate some feedback. As most people
know, the AW mods were let go at the end of October and the result was that the boards are now unmoderated.

That can have positives and negatives. However, I have noticed lately some instances where I miss the mods. Most of you know what I mean:

1) Shouting matches between users that seem to go on and on.

2) Threads that have gone way off topic and will not die.

There are probably more examples that I forgot to mention.

I don't know if it's realistic to ever hope for full-time mods again. The main reason the original mods were let go (IMO) was probably related to money and cutting costs.
Full time mods may be unnecessary and superfluous. However, it might be nice to have someone or perhaps a few individuals
who have the abiltiy/authority to perform some of the old mod duties such as

1) Editing threads
2) Moving threads to other forums
3) Closing threads

Of course, this would probably end up being
on a volunteer basis, but I assume that it could be possible.

There are a lot of veteran posters here who
probably still remember the etiquette of the old AW boards.

Obviously, expecting someone to monitor
every thread and be online 24/7 is unrealistic. However, a lot of times it was other users who would notify the mod
through e-mail about specific concerns.
The mod would look at the concern and have the ability to take action if need be.

I'm not nominating myself for the position, but just posting this so that others can respond. What do you think?

Granted, these boards are still much better than some of the unmoderated usenet groups, but certainly (for better or worse) different then they used to be.

I see a lot less problems without a Moderator than when there was one.

I don't think we need censored as much as we were with the moderators.

I do, however, feel that a moderator would stop certain posters from their ranting and fowl language. as least one user would be suspended by now(I wish).

so I think a part time volunteer moderator would be very useful.

AW will never give the keys to the car to any non AW authorized person. Someone can not edit or remove posts without a special password or whatever and the legal aspects of misuse could be a factor. These non AW Services boards may be hanging on by a thread ( no pun intended ) as they generate almost zero revenue and are not essential for AW users as other message board sites also discuss general topics of online auctions.

I think that those who post have the ability to moderate if all AW users would do it.....When a thread gets out of hand if all responsible AW users in the future would just make the choice not to post on that thread anymore then it would be buried......maybe when the thread gets to that point someone needs to challenge other users to just ignore and let it be buried......I did this on the thread that is being referred to and so far it seems to be working as it is further down the list this morning. Hopefully by the end of the day it will be GOING....GOING.....GONE!

If there was a moderator now, this thread wouldn't be allowed in ebay forum. Unrelated ebay threads is the biggest problem.

I'm glad to see the moderators gone. Two buttons are all we need: 1)Scroll down- to scroll past posts we don't want to read, 2) Ignore poster. Very effective and cheap. Yahoo even has profanity filters on their boards and ignore buttons.

After being kicked off for a month for mocking a moderator, right before they got rid of them, it acually helped AW keep me as a customer because I would have left for good. I wasn't going to support Russia Idealistic thinking anymore.

It is better here without the moderators and I don't think we really need them.

I agree that posters who cause major disruptions should be ignored after awhile when it is realized that there is no way that anyone is going to change their agenda. Though it is tempting to try to get through to them just one last time.

They will then hopefully understand what this forum is used for and contribute in a useful way or sit back and learn or finally just go away.

There will always be a few problems, depending on personalities and moods, but most times things seem to go quite smoothly.

Please, no moderators. I beg of you.

What I saw of moderation during last year was that it was highly subjective and more-or-less biased. Let's not even go back to the bad old days when Glenda's husband was a moderator <shudder>.

I enjoy the open discourse here sans moderator. Let's keep it that way!

No mods, the place is bettrer now than it used to be without the mods aggravating everyone.

There may be the occasional fight, but just stay out of those threads if it gets boring.

And don't respond when provoked.

Y'know, it may even be good to have a ranting thread going, that way when the mood strikes us, we can go in there and join in the fun. Then when it's out of our system, we can get out of there and just go on about our business, much like a stop at the gym for a quick workout.
I know a lot of folks are in a couple of those NY threads, and guess what? It has no affect on me unless i go in there.
Maybe if the population here really builds up we might have to revisit moderators, but with the current level of users I think this place is a lot better than it was before in that regard.

Yes, CHANGE THE CHANNEL! People just can't seem to get that. My kid gets that.

I'm for no mods. Seen them do too many stupid things.

A call for mods is like asking for a babysitter because we don't know how to handle things ourselves.

Repeat after me: IF I DON'T LIKE WHAT SOMEONE IS SAYING OR I DON'T LIKE THE TOPIC I'LL JUST CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

Simple enough.

I'd be a good one. I'd do NOTHING!

No that's not true. I would delete personal information that any invidual doesn't want posted about themselves.

I do notice however that there are new forums for chit-chat and what-not.

In general, in here, I don't see a whole lot of Hi LILY--Hi PETE--Yo LilY--blah-blah, off topic stuff in here which is great.

Concerning the offending thread, I think it has a whole lot to do with eBay and this section. You know, like do you watch other members auctions then post the item # up and call them names, etc. I think it was rather disgusting and I've learned from it, but I still vote no to mods, unless they have very-very limited functions.

It seems there has been less problems since the mods have gone.

I am beginning to think that the problem posts were done more so to rattle the cages of the mods than to flame OPs.

I do not regret telling Joice the Moderator that there was an opening on "The Weakest Link" TV show to replace Ann Robinson. She was one mean moderator. Funny that it turned out that she turned out to be ... the weakest link ... goodbye".

Actually, I like it without moderators. I don't think it has gotten too bad here, and I like the freedom of writing something without it being deleted, or locked up. It was too controlled of an environment, this is much nicer. If you are annoyed at the one person posting, if people stopped responding to her, then she would probably go away, because you can't have an argument by yourself (well, you can, and that might explain a lot)

If one contributes they are part of the problem. If you don't like what is being said, don't post. The thread will scroll away.
There is room for everyone here.
