Hi all. I was a little steamed this evening to find a seller has stolen my pictures and even my VERBIAGE for an item that he/she is now selling. I can't imagine they are selling the same exact one as me and have my same style house and furniture (seen in the background...). So my question to you all is... Aren't there some sort of ebay rules about this? I have gone through the USELESS help system and can't find anything. If any of you can help me out, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thank you!

Someone else could answer this better, but here goes:
This happened to another seller this past week. They resaved their picture under a new name and uploaded it for their auction. Then they saved an ugly picture under the original photo name that spoiled the thief's auction.
good luck!

WOW! I didn't think to see if she did a direct link ! GREAT advise. I'll check that now. THANK YOU!
What I'm wondering though is if ebay will do anything? I thought people weren't supposed to do this!

This is a link to the thread of a seller that had their picture stolen. At least you may get a chuckle out of the picture they substituted. Other than e-mailing Ebay of the problem, I don't know if they have a rule that specifically addresses this. It should be grounds for stopping the auction, in my opinion.

Thanks anyway, I did finally find something of ebay's about it.

Discusses NOT copying people's stuff. We'll see though, if they do anything about it. I've reported it for now.

Keep us posted. I would be interested in hearing if Ebay does what it states in the link you gave.

If it's an Auctionwatch user that stole your pic, send an email to AW giving them all the details.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

I have had both picture and image stolen from me as well but only became aware of it when the thief had the gall to email me and claim I stole it from them!
I suspect they had hired someone to prepare auction descriptions and they took shortcuts when they found my ad.
I did swap images, wrote a stern email and never heard anything more. I also undercut the seller for a couple of months until they dropped the item.
If it is an AW user, then they will certainly be able to tell who uploaded the image and copy first, and perhaps might even have the gumption to close the thief's account.
One can hope.

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago. Go to eBay and find the link to their VeRO program (sorry, I don't have it at my finger tips to post right now). You will have to fill out a form and fax it to them, including your original auction listing number and the offending one. They will pull the copied listing.

HI there,
OK, thank you all so much for the info. But here's some more. My original auction is no longer in the ebay database as it dates back to September of last year. CAn they access it?
I wrote to ebay and we'll see what happens. I don't expect much. I also wrote to auctionwatch as well. Same expectations. Anyway, I'm debating on writing to the seller and let me ask... what do you think about those bidding? If I write to them, am I interfering w/ the auction and will I be the one to end up in trouble with ebay?
Whatcha think?

This has happened to me here and on other sites. What I have started doing is to open the jpeg with an editor & insert into the image the phrase "Image property of" & resave
the image. Its a pain but if someone wants to use my images, they have to do some fancy editing to remove my name.

There is a "no click" code you can place in your listing. I found it on eBay community chat boards under photos/html. Click on the first thread "Bob's Tips" then click the link Bob's Tips. Scroll down until you see "no right click." This code, when placed in your listing, is supposed to cause your message (of your choosing) to display when someone right clicks on your pics. So they are not allowed to cut/copy and paste. You can put a little message that says "try scanning your own pics instead of stealing mine" or something like that. I've yet to try it, but it does apparently work. good luck

I really hated to add my name to every picture, but the disabling feature WORKS! I have added it to my auction listing preference so it is automatically there when I prepare my auctions and anyone who tries to copy will get "function disabled" as their message. I wanted to write something snide, but who knows, maybe customers have reasons for copying and I don't want to be rude to them.
I can not thank you all enough for your support and useful information as well. I checked out the Vero stuff too and we'll see what they have to say. It's wonderful knowing you are all out there to help!
Thank you - and keep the suggestions coming!

Right click disable is pointless, since all you have to do is click View, and Source to get the URL's of the pictures.
Not to mention it also disables Open in a New Window, which immediately makes me close the window and pass the auction up.

You can join VeRO (Verified Rights Owner program) by just emailing the form they provide. Once you're a member, you only need to send eBay an email and they will immediately yank the offending auction. "Disable Right Click" is useless, a two-year old can easily get around it by just viewing your source code.

Marsha Collier(author of How to Start an eBay Business for Dummies) runs the site at http://www.coolebaytools.com and addresses this exact problem. Just go there and scroll down half a page and click on the "Do Other Sellers Steal your Pictures?" article. The article contains html code that you can copy and paste that supposedly prevents stealing. I haven't tried it to see if it works yet or not.
Hope this helps.

HI Everyone.
Well, ebay actually did something about it:
Here's the email they say they sent AND the person removed the pictures already, saying their image host (AW) deleted them. Ha!
***********
[email sent by eBay to user]
We have received a report from another member that your listing
###################
contains their photos, and they have not authorized you to use this
material. At this time we have not yet received a formal request to
remove your listing. However, should we receive such a request, under
penalty of perjury, we may have no choice but to remove your listing.
We invite you to review our Copyrights, Trademarks & Your Listing
guidelines found at:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-copyrights.html.
This page provides helpful information regarding the use of other eBay
user's text, images, and/or HTML. If, after reviewing these guidelines,
you believe changes to your listing are appropriate, we encourage you
to:
1. edit the listing to remove any unauthorized material, if no bids
have been received;
2. end the listing early yourself (see links below); or
3. change the photograph(s) that you have linked to in your listing.
We understand that the laws governing use of materials found on the
internet often are confusing and unclear. We trust that our guidelines
along with this email will assist you in evaluating your listing. If you

Ebay also told me that if I wanted to pursue it with ebay, to go ahead. Interesting!
Thanks everyone.
BTW, to Rewassago, I guess I'm a 1.5 yr old, cause here's my next question: If the right click feature is disabled, how can a person view the source code? Just curious cause right click is the only way I know how. And, what does a person OPEN NEW WINDOW for in an auction? I'm not exactly clear and don't want to inhibit or alienate any buyers. (Who can afford it!?)
Thanks.

Menu Bar: View > Source
you just need to know the bare minimum about html tags and scroll through the page until you find something like this...
<IMG SRC="/adstream_nx.cgi/MC/Post@Top1,Left1!Top1?x" BORDER=0>
(from this page your reading right now)
SRC="location of the picture, file etc."
