I have noticed some people who sell a bakelite made item on eBay say they did the test. What test is that? Does anyone know? I'd appreciate knowing how you test an item to see if it is bakelite or not.

There are several types of tests I use the Simachrome polish on a Q-Tip test personally but you can rub it use warm water scrubbing bubbles formulae 409, hot pin and a few others.
Simachrome wont ruin the finish as other tests will.
I'll post a link to a Bakelite site when I find it

There are several ways, but one way is to get a can of Dow Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom cleaner and a white paper towel. Moisten the paper towel with the scrubbing bubbles and rub the wet paper towel on a small area of the piece you are testing. If the paper towel turns yellow (no matter what color the piece is) it's bakelite.

Same here with the scrubbing bubbles. It has never failed me yet. Just a little bit on the end of a Q tip rub your item and if the Q tip turns gold or yellow it is supposed to be bakelite.

Formula 409 has worked pretty well for me. Please DON'T do the "hot pin" test as it damages the object (although a small area) and many buyers won't purchase something that has been "hot pinned". Just a recommendation!
