hello, I won an auction the other night and the seller has the words PAYPAL ACCEPTED next to payment terms. I sent him the money via paypal. This morning, he sent me a response to the YOU'VE GOT CASH email he received stating that he is not setup to take credit cards and please send him a check or money order.

Of course, I've written to him and told him that he apparently set himself up for PAYPAL since they accepted his email address and sent him the money and took MY money. I told him he must arrange to send the money back to me before I can send him a check.

HELP! what should I do here? Should I have PAYPAl intervene? When I send him a check, should I deduct any fees that paypal will charge when t hemoney is returned? thanks

Personal accounts can't accept credit cards.

My auctions list paypal but I state transfers only, no credit cards.

Did the auction say anything about no credit cards?

If they only have a personal account then they have to upgrade before they can get the money.

Paypal will take your money even if the seller is not registered or can't accept credit cards.

The seller should be able to refuse the credit card funded paypal payment. I wouldn't send payment until I got the first one back.

yeahwell Email the seller and ask him to go into his account and "refund" the payment you made him. If he refunds (he has that option showing for 10 days), there will be no charge to you. If he uses the "send money" tab, you will be charged a fee. I would also very nicely suggest he perhaps remove the PP logo or stress in his ad that he accepts PP for balance transfers or e-checks only. Then, suggest he update his preferences and click off that he does not wish to accept cc payments. After he does that, anyone attempting to make a cc card payment will be advised that he has elected to NOT accept cc payments. That way, his future buyers will know immediately they will need to make payment by some method other than cc.

mrfoxy76-If yeahwell has a business account, he will be charged for receiving any money from anyone for any reason other than a refund and that must be within 10 days. If he were to be charged a fee on the return, why shouldn't he deduct that from the MO since he, in good faith, made payment using a method advertised by this seller?

foxy, you're not quite getting it. I paid a payment to a seller for PAYPAL and he doesn't accept that type of PAYPAL payment. When paypal sends the money back to me, they might very well take out fees. Therefore, since the seller said he takes PAYPAL payments but actually doesn't, I will be out money for something that isn't my fault... it is the sellers fault because he said he accepts PAYPAL but doesn't. So, when i pay him with a money order, I will then deduct the fees. Does this make sense to you????

like they said, your seller should be able to hit that button within 5-10 days to not accept your payment,if i understand the situation,he has a personal paypal account and he cannot accept your cc payment unless he upgrades,so your payment is sitting in limbo until he upgrades.
you need to talk this over with your seller, dont forget paypal accepts the charge from your cc company so the money has been charged and you will see it on your statement if the seller does not do anything
whether you want to deduct the fee from the money order or check you want to send your seller, you have to discuss this with your seller.
we can tell you anything but if your seller does not go along,he will sit on the item and not ship.

if i were the seller i would return the money order with a polite note advising payment is incomplete.

looks like the seller did mess up with their payment terms though

I don'tknow from what you have said whether you have a PayPal acct. If you do, look at your transactions. If he has not claimed the payment, it will say unclaimed & all you have to do is cancel the transaction. I have never had a problem with P/P on a transaction. I have had a couple that were unclaimed because the buyer didn't know how to get set up.

Just last week I had the flip-side to yeahwell's problem. I tried to pay for a win with a cc through PP which the seller said she took.

I got to the "make payment" screen and a pop-up advised she had elected to not take cc payments.

I emailed her and told her that I would have to send a MO because, I would not allow a direct draft out of my bank for an e-check.

She emails back, she DID take cc and try again.

After, 2 more attempts I gave up and that's when she realized she had set her preferences to NOT take cc payments so she had to go and change that.

Finally, I was able to pay.

A money order would have been easier for sure!

But on to the point...if this seller will not take cc payments through PP, he needs to make the necessary changes in his Preferences so future buyers won't have the same problem.

here is how it works...

You initiate a payment. That payment goes to paypal. then paypal pays the person that you wanted to pay. since the person who you paid can't accept cc, paypal is now using a passive-agressive sales tactic for them to upgrade their account. this is why the money is still with paypal. I have a business account, so I don't know what the options are, my assumption is that since the seller doesn't actually have the payment, that the seller cannot refund that payment.

Check your listing at Paypal and see if it says 'pending' or 'completed'. If it says 'pending', try to cancel it. ( I know you can do this for monies sent to non-existant email addresses and those who refused to sign up for paypal). Paypal should not be charging any fees for this transaction. The only way that would happen is if the seller sent you money. But he can't because he doesn't have your money, paypal has it.

I have a friend who has a personal account at paypal and he sells Antenna Boosters and DVDs on Ebay. He has it plastered all over his auctions that he does not accept cc. He says he still gets people who try. Check the sellers ad carefully. If it doesn't say anything about no cc, he may be new to paypal, or he may be dense.

Blessings,

Definately try to cancel the payment... I tried to pay someone who didn't take paypal and was able to cancel it because they didn't accept the payment.... Hopefully he hasn't accepted the payment!!
