I'll be selling a couple of beer steins purchased by a friend in Germany in the early 60's. He says they're antiques...can anyone out there help with this? On the bottom of one is "Made in Germany"...nothing on the other. But...when they're held up to the light, there's a raised image visible on the bottoms (the porcelain is thicker making the image...seems to be a man and a woman. Both seem to commemorate military regiments...the one pictured has the dates 1906-1909 on the top. Both have pewter lids. Any help with identification/date/etc. would be greatly appreciated...I've included 3 photos so thanks for waiting for them to load.

A bit of history of the conflict. The picture on your stein is of a cavalry charge.

The Pig War 1906-1909

In an attempt to reduce its economic dependence on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Seribia began (1904) to import French rather than Austrian munitions and established (1905) a customs union with Bulgaria, making tariff-laden Austrian goods unsalble in Serbia. Long used to setting economic policy, Austria responded in 1906 by closing its borders to Serbian pork. Serbia refused to bow to Vienna, gained French investment to build new packing plants for international trade, began to order materials from the Austrian rival Germany, and pressured the Austrian-administrated provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina for a trade outlet on the Adriatic Sea. Russia supported Serbia's actions, and war between Austria-Hungary and Russia was averted only because of a German ultimatum (1909) demanding the cessation of Russian aid to Serbia. Serbia and Austria developed a new commercial treaty (1909), but Serbia covertly stirred up trouble among the southern Slavs in newly Austrian-annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, actions that contributed to the start of World War I.

Thanks again Trai...Maybe you can help with the history on the second one? It shows a naval scene...on top is written"Hochree-Torpedoboots-Flottille Wilhelmshafen 19-7-1910. Across the botton (sort of on a banner) are "Erinnerung an meine Dienrtzeit" and, on the very bottom "Mtr. Fabersen". There's a picture of a ship in the middle and it's flanked by a picture of a seaman and a naval officer. Again, any "history" help would be greatly appreciated...I could post a photo if it would help. Thanks!

Hi, here is a link to the german navel site.

http://www.richthofen.com/scheer/scheer16.htm

You can find any history of the P.T. arm. hope that helps.

"Erinnerung an meine Dienrtzeit"

My german is somewhat rusty but what it says is "memory of my service"

Thanks again, Trai...You're TERRIFIC for being so helpful. Great site...one question. The dates on my stein are 1907-1910 and the date mentioned on the site was 1915 so maybe my stein commemorates some earlier battle? Thanks again...
