I just did a comparison of shipping rates between the two. FDEXG is lower for 1 lb in Zones 1 & 2. At zone 4 about the same. Zones 5 & above Priority is lower. The same for 2 lbs. But at 3 lbs. there is a great difference Priority is $5.20 across the board, FDEXG is lower in all but Zone 8 & that is 29 cents more. At 4 lbs. FDXG is much lower & is that way on up the weight scale. I am going to get a FedEx air rate chart & compare that with Priority mail. You have to realize that FDXG is much slower than Priority Mail.

Of course you must be aware that the whole picture changes in two weeks or so when the Post Office ups the Priority Mail rates and goes to zoned prices over 1 lb.

Also, I wonder if you took into account the surcharges that Fedex applies for residentail and rural delivery, for fuel surcharge etc.

just to add my 2 cents-using fed exp may be slower but insurance up to 100 is included in shipping fee and you do get SIGNATURE RECEIPT.
WHICH COMES IN HANDY WHEN THERE IS CHARGEBACK.
also, ebay bidders dont mind filing usps claims by standing in line with broken item etc,but if you have a shop, customers may not like to do that.

I would like to see a chart comparing the rates of UPS and Fedex (including surcharges) compared to the new rates of the USPS.

I like the free insurance. I don't care for the extra surcharge for home delivery.

Does that include the residential surcharge?

I don't understand..what do you mean by this? Priority is all different rates for all the zones at 3 lbs. The $5.20 rate is the old rate. The new rate is anywhere from $4.75 - $8.58 for three pounds.

dmrick,

My usps rate chart shows same as yours. Every zone is a separate, higher rate. I live near east coast. Could it be different for those living in the middle of the continent?

2 pounds:
zones 1,2,3=$3.95
zone 4 =$4.55
zone 5 -$4.90
zone 6 =$5.05
zone 7 =$5.40
zone 8 =$5.75

One other thing you might want to consider is talking directly to a Fed Ex sales rep. I have negotiated a % disc because of my high volume. I spent about 45K last year with USPS and with showing him that he gave me a price break by volume and another price break depending on the weight of my items. I ship items from 1 pound to 75 pounds and it was extrememly beneficial to work with him. yes, I will pay for boxes now but I can go to the local box company and get great sturdy boxes of all sizes that they call seconds because they printed for various companies that were printed incorrectly. I got a 36" x 15" x 15" box for 50 cents when I bought 100 of them. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I normally get them for 15 to 25 cents for smaller boxes.
I am thrilled with Fed Ex... free tracking and insurance up to $100 and when it is over $100 then it is only 35 cents each additional $100.

I use Fedex regularily. The website does not have consistant information with actuality. For example, "Ground" says for shipping between Business and Business. Ground Home Delivery says Business to Residential, but you need preapproval by signing an agreement. I don't have any ageement with Fedex, and I usually ship to Residential, and they charge me the lower Ground Business rate. Go figure the logic!

So anyone who is looking to ship Fedex and thinks they will be charged Ground Home Delivery at a couple extra dollars is mostly incorrect. On the form I fill out I check "Residential" but it still goes at the regular lower Ground rate.

Gas surcharge is only 3-4¢.

Hello, I brought this thread back up because I am so confused on the postal changes, I know there have been posts to other options, such as buying postage online, cheaper Delivery confirmation online, and I lost all that good advise. I am hoping if you have a good system to save on shipping costs you will post again? Sorry Lost my notes, it won't happen again!! there was also talk of buying shipping supplies cheap?

I may go with a fixed rate to start, but need to mull it all over.
Thanks in advance.

Time is money I have neither!!! LOL

FEDEX GROUND is far better as you get a realistic schedule of when the item will arrive, free insurance and better customer service.

I take ground over usps anyday.

Interesting thread. I've just compared rates on my last 20 shipments. FedEx Ground, with Residential Surcharge, would be $2.50 to $3.50 more expensive than the new Priority Mail rates (including Delivery Confirmation), and with FedEx I would have to have my own packaging, and I did not even figure in that cost!

So with figuring in packaging costs, and Insurance off-sets, FedEx would still be at least $2 to $3 more expensive per my average package, than the USPS Priority. Plus even though I am out in the boonies, my local Post Office is only 8 miles away, and the closest FedEx depot is 36 miles away.

So all in all, looks like I will be staying with USPS.

nanntique, apparently you missed my previous post. Before rushing to conclusions about rates, get a Fedex Ground home delivery quote for a package, then take it to Fedex and mail it, and see if it is the same or less. You may be surprised.

I ship residential and am not charged the residential rate. The only way I figure it is the package will be delivered during normal business hours.

I used Fedex on a few packages and it was higher when I dropped it off than the internet price showed every time. The last one was a large heavy package that showed $55.00 to ship and when I dropped it off the price was $88.00 I had the printout from the internet to show them but they were not interested in looking at it. I will not go back.

When you looked up the rate, did you enter the dimensions?

I look up regular Ground (B2B) rates and that is what I get charged even though I ship to residential. Can't explain it. Six different emloyees too.

Does anyone know where I can find the actual shipping rates to the different zones? I found the listing of zones based on my zip code, but I cannot find actual prices to each zone...

Thanks,

Blessings,

If I can not trust, FedEx, on what is says on their Web Site, why should I trust them with my parcels? I would prefer NOT to play 'guess and see' on my shipping rates that I have to quote a buyer. Plus, if they don't follow their own published rates, what guarantee do I have that they may charge one rate one minute, and another the next?

Plus there is still the big issue of me having to provide my own shipping box.

I shipped a huge package through Fedex for about $12. Priority is $24. You'd have charged your customer $12 for that "free box."

I think you were just charged for the larger dimensions and you didn't enter that into the site when you got the quote.

Well, I considered FedEx, but when I checked their various "Home Delivery" addresses, I found that often they didn't deliver everywhere we ship to and I don't want to bother with three carriers. I have UPS now for heavier items, they pick up daily and we have been happy with their service for 3 or 4 years now.

We use priority for lighter weight items (5 lbs & under), when the new rates go into effect I’ll check again, but we find our customers, particularly of our lighter weight items, seem to want them FAST – and priority gets it there faster than UPS or FedEx.

I now ship exclusively by UPS without exception!!! I do not ship lighter items by
priority mail or parcel post even if it's only going close to where I live. Shipments to
Hawaii and Alaska is shipped by UPS 2nd day air only!!! All this information is in
my TOS as most of the items I ship are heavy. I sell cast iron products.

Yes, residential deliveries are $1.10 more than business deliveries but insurance is
free up to $100.00 and so is package tracking. Additional insurance is 0.35¢ per
$100.00

I started a UPS daily pick up account 1/4/02 and switched entirely to UPS on
6/1/02. It has not hurt my sales that I can tell. In fact my sales have almost doubled.

Maybe I loose a few customers to priority mail and parcel post but at double the
sales I had in the past I can stand it.

I live eight miles round trip from the post office but I don't have to worry about them
any more. Everything is set outside in a protected area each day around noon and is
picked up by 2:00 PM each evening.

To each his own, but this is the way I handled the situation once the new postal rates
were announced. No more standing in line for this guy. No more hassle with clerks.
No more lengthy insurance claim prrocesses.

The benefits far outweigh the cost of packing supplies

Due to the USPS coming rate increases, I have been studying FedEx Ground and box dimensions are REALLY important. I have noticed that if you stay 16x16x16 or under the rates 3#'s and up beat Priority even with the FedEx residential surcharge added (appx $1.15). But if you go to 17 inches the rates match or beat Priority. The free insurance and tracking is a big plus to buyers. The negatives are that I have to drive further than the PO to drop off FedEx Ground shipments and buy my own tape. Boxes aren't a problem for me so I won't really miss the free Priority boxes. I will still use Priority for 2 pounds and under and Media Mail.

I heard somewhere that Fedex has discounts if you have a account. Is this true?

feistyone -

90% of what I ship (paper & prints) weighs less than a pound, so zones do not apply. Plus, at least currently, all my packing supplies are free (box, tape, labels, envelopes) and since I electronicaly process my Delivery Confirmations, they are nominal as well.

According to the Fedex site, you can't even ship Ground Home without an agreement. So the residential surcharge is irrelevant to those who don't want to pay that extra fee.

Anyone who is Anti-Discrimination should avoid shipping USPS and UPS and only ship Fedex or other service. The USPS hires more minorities than any other company in America, and UPS employs 50% minorities. That's a lot for such a huge company!

Millions of White Americans who are more qualified for a position do not get hired because of this blatant discrimination. There are equal opportunity laws that are blatantly broken and not enforced, often because any company that does business with the government is forced to hire x amount of minorities or lose the governments business. Ship Fedex!

All other issues aside, where do you get the notion that Fedex doesn't do business with the government? Fedex has a huge contract to ship packages for the USPS.
