Will the US eBay site ever get another FLD, or has 1¢ gallery day, 'been it'. We really need another 'shot in the arm', in this time of summer doldrums and economic uncertainty. Sure wish eBay would give US a helping hand!

It is hard to say if they will or not. But from the past FLD's, they may have determined that they lost too much revenue on it. Or maybe just a huge overload the system cannot take.
It is hard to say why we didn't get a FLD this summer. It maybe coming yet.
I would like to toss out an idea for it though. I would allow a free listing day, but limit the number of auctions you can list. Let's say 200. That way people will be less inclined to list marginal let alone junk and keep many of the better quaility items in view.
Another idea I just had would be to illiminate all FLDs and replace them with an anniversary free listing day. This is the day you signed up as a user on Ebay. Every year on your anniversary date, you could do basic listings for free and pay for upgrades just like FLD's are now, but you do it on your anniversary date. The benefit to this is the system wouldn't get bogged down by everyone listing thousands of items all at once and allow everyone to get rewarded for being an Ebay user.

I like your idea of anniversary free listing day and also limiting the number of listing on a free day.All tho I have about 400 auctions ready for a FLD, some I went ahead and listed as it is stuff I list every week.

I also like those ideas. It sure would have been nice to have had a fld this summer. I have gone ahead and listed a few things as I have so much stuff I am afraid I will get trapped in my computer room if I don't get rid of some of it.

caffeitalia,
Good ideas on an improved FLD

I'm beginning to think that there will not be any more FLDs. eBay is catering to the big sellers and having a semi-predictable FLD may cut into eBay profits as the sellers wait for the FLDs. The FLDs have some drawbacks to eBay, like regular sellers getting upset that their items are lost in a sea of non-paying listings. Some sellers may have been reluctant to list in the week following the FLD for the same reason.

I think we will still see free listing days. Right now Ebay is trying to get sellers hooked on using the gallery and the 1 cent gallery day is a good way to do it.

I think they will do the same with us as they are doing with Australia on July 2. They are having a free listing day but for fixed price "auctions" only. They say the new set up for the US site will be done by the end of July. Perhaps they will have a free listing day for fixed priced only after they have setup the new Ebay format. That would be the start of August.

It would also help them change their image from a auction house to the worlds largest online store which is what they seem to be gearing towards.

I'm hoping that the US FLD was delayed due to the 4th of July.

But never the less, I have a lot of good Australian & New Zealand customers, so on the 2nd it will be, G'day Mate !

I'm curious how a USA 'fixed rate' auction would work. eBay already has the Half.com fixed price unit with it's 100 million items and it is getting more and more integrated into the auction site. Half.com listings are and have always been free but there probably isn't a Half.com setup for Australians yet and this FLD for them may jump start a regional Half.com.
Some ideas and possibilites. Since eBay makes a 15% commission on Half sales, eBay may do something bold like mix in the Half listings with the auction listings. For example, a bidder wants to bid or buy a certain Harry Potter book and after entering some search criteria in the eBay search engine, some 22 different entries are displayed with 14 of them Half entries with price and one or two fixed shipping costs options displayed just below the title line.

That type of setup would knock out a lot of ebay auction sellers that are trying to be opprotunistic and cashing in on eBayers that do not use Half or do not know how to make Half purchases. I'm certain that eBay would rather make the 15% on Half items then the much less amount on auction items of common items.

The rare or unusual items on eBay would not be effected at all as those items are not usually listed on Half.

Quit being such cry babies and pay the fees. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. I never seen such cry babies as there is on this board. You need to spend more time on your auctions and finding ways to make money then you wouldn't have to worry about a losy free listing day.

I like caffeitalia's idea...

It would give me SEVERAL eBay FLDs throughout the year.

Shoot! I might even sign up with a few more IDs (around October/November) to have a few more FLDs, too.

Oops,
Found a flaw in that thinking. A person using multiple ID's could really goof up that idea. I guess some kind of system would have to be developed so a person/business could only do it once a year. Maybe computer ID. Still like the annivesary idea, but obviously would need some safe guards so a person could truely only do it once a year.

I believe that eBay has reached the point where they no longer need to have the FLDs. The listing numbers are up, the big sellers are King, the fixed prices are being phased in, etc. The FLDs are now actually counter productive to eBay. I'd love to see the two annual FLDs return or even have more of them but I think that may be nothing more than wishful thinking.

So am I the only old timer around here to set you all straight on free listing days?

There has only been one FLD on a regular basis for many years, and that is a few days before Christmas, and with a ten day auction you can cover Christmas and New Years. That is when ebay sellers all figure things will be slow, but folks, it's not. It is a great time to sell!

I see no reason why ebay won't have its usual Christmas FLD this year. It really makes them look good as they end the year.

Last year's FLD in June was unusual, as were others scattered over the previous years. It had never happened in June before to my recollection, so I don't understand why everyone thinks it should happen again.

Be nice if it did, but I think you will only see smaller promotions between now and December.

Anyone else with a long memory have all the FLD dates written down? I know it posted here last summer.

Ebay was trying a different tactic to get sellers to list, which is get us hooked on using the Gallery, and that gives ebay longer term streams of revenue. FLD is a one time pump. If it was successful they will try that or something similar again at the right time, otherwise they'd go back to doing FLDs. Don't expect anything else until the end of 3Q (Sept).
