I called Fed Ex today to open a ground business account. The rep was taking my information and then all of a sudden she said, " I am sorry I am unable to open any new ground accounts, due to the fact one of our competitors may be having a work stopage". And if that happened they would have more business then they could handle, and they don't want to put themselves in that position. When I asked what the heck that meant she said she didn't have anymore information. I asked if it meant UPS could go on strike for instance, and she said something like that. So I couldn't open an account.

I hope they do go on strike!
That will help me,as I only ship USPS Priority.
With a UPS increase, the USPS won't seem so bad!

I had heard a rumor that they weren't taking new accounts, but this is the first I had heard the reason behind it. I checked out some of the recent Yahoo articles on both Fedex and UPS, and there's no mention of impending "work stopages" anywhere.
The information you got is correct. If UPS goes on strike, many of their business customers have made contingency commitments to FedEx. As you might know, UPS does waaaay more business than FedEx and if they go 'out' FedEx will be filled to the brim and then some. No way can FedEx pick up their slack, so they took orders in advance for a just in case scenerio. That being done, it's now a waiting game. They can't take on any more accounts until they know UPS is not going on strike.

Just asked my mail man, about this, he says it is a threat (strike) for barginng power and does not think they will.
He also said there is going to be a MAJOR high level investigation into the high management of the USPS for there spending and there pay, as the USPS is very upset on the way uppper management is raising rates and keeping the money to pay big managers, he said this investigation will be soon.

Talked to my UPS driver today, he states that a strike probably won't happen. Most of the negotiating is over and there are handshake agreements until paper can be written up.
