Tried for the first time yesterday at my post office the "NEW" online delivery confirmation for first class mail. I was charged the 13 cents for delivery confirmation and also charged an additional 12 cents for "hand sort". I've never been charged that before. I used 6 x9 AMPAD peel and seel 28 lb heavyweight white woven paper envelopes which I've just found at Walmart. I thought the envelopes were great, but not if they are going to charge me extra to use them at the post office!
I also sent a padded envelope which was 9 x 12 which cost me 83 cents plus 13 cents for delivery confirmation, but it did not receive the hand sort charge?
I'm beginning to be as confused at the postal clerks!! Any Ideas??

never been charged that before but im guessing the type of envelope your using isnt liked by their machines. so i wouldnt use them either since that extra charge is ridiculous.

From the Post Office Web Site:
Nonmachinable Surcharge: An additional $0.12 is required for items weighing 1 ounce or less with any of the following criteria:
a. Square letters.
b. The height exceeds 6-1/8 inches, or length exceeds 11-1/2 inches, or thickness exceeds 1/4 inch.
c. The length divided by height is less than 1.3 or more than 2.5 (length is the dimension parallel to the address).
d. It has clasps, strings, buttons, or similar closure devices.
e. It is too rigid or contains items such as pens that cause the thickness of the mailpiece to be uneven.
f. It has an address parallel to the shorter dimension of the mailpiece.

I have sent many items first class that, apparently, are supposed to be charges more. I don't get charged because I weigh and stamp all of my packages at home. Then I mail them either through my mail carrier or in the post office 'slot'. I often write, hand cancel, on an envelope because it has some sort of thicker 'widget' inside. Never had a problem so far (now knocking on wood to make it not come true)

I often mail items like that and always go to the PO to have them put proper postage on it. I had too many items returned to me because of those restrictions. Now, since I go to the PO, if they goof up on postage, the parcel still goes through because it has the official stamp or postage right on it.
