I received a money order today in the mail with a name and a auction ID. There was no address as to where the item should be mailed. Luckily there was an item number so I wrote to the buyer and politely asked where I should send his item since he did not include one when payment was sent.
This is how the buyer responded:
i dont feel safe giving you my address because i wanna look out for my safety thankyou
What would you do next in this case?
And buyers wonder why they do not receive their items within 48 hours after payment is received. If this does not take the cake for the stupidest person to win an auction.
Time to get a real job again.

?????? Are you the seller? If so, why would you be sending a payment to a buyer?

Trai it should have been item not payment, but if the buyer did not want the item, I would have still needed an address to send him a refund.
Melcher, good point. I think ebay needs to have people pass an IQ test before allowing people to become members.

trai - The poster is the seller. The seller RECIEVED the payment but the BUYER will NOT give an address to him due to the fact he is looking out for his safety.
So the question is - How does the seller get the nuyer the item which is now paid for?
I thanks GOD that I have buyers that are not so dumb!

A real job deals with the same ignorance, and you have to actually look at the person when they say such things.

logansdad has edited his original post which I copied as it was confusing. I understand, just wanted to clarify.
As to what to do with a buyer like this, just sit back and have a cold one and shake your head.
E-mail and ask for an address, tell them otherwise they don't get their stuff.

As Mark Twain said,"Truth is Stranger than Fiction because Fiction must be based upon Reality."
Okay, your answer:
Fine with me, I have the item ready for you to pick up...
His Answer: Where do you live?
Three Guesses what your answer back to him should be(and the first two don't count)

I guess the buyer wants me to address his item as follows:
First Name Last Name
USA, Planet Earth
He must know something about the post office being able to deliver packages with only this much information.
I know the person's name. I have just omitted it for privacy.
I am trying to compose a response to his last statement, but I am having a problem coming up with a polite response.

E-mail and thank him again for his payment.
"I understand your concern about giving out your address.
However, since you paid me for your auction item, I want to ship it to you. But I can't ship it without an address.
Please provide me with an address so I can ship your item, or at least a P.O. Box that I can return your money order to.
EBay requires that the buyer gives his address to the seller so he can ship his item."

No, I think that is an incorrect address, because this buyer is obviously from another planet.

Tell him you understand his concern perfectly, and to protect his privacy you will ship it to him c/o his next door neighbor. Then ask him to send the neighbor's address.

I've done this, too. The funny thing is - the buyer never wonders how I got their address. Maybe they think eBay gives it to us???

why don't you just pull their information through ebay, then email them with the zip code and tell them that the item will be sent to the address on ebay. If that is wrong, then they need to contact you by....yada yada yada...

Ebay isn't the only place it happens! We have an antique shop and a new customer wanted us to come see about purchasing some furniture. I asked for his address and phone number and he said right to my face "Oh, I don't give that out to anyone". I said, "Then you will have to bring the furniture to us". He stuttered and stammered and finially gave me the information. The scarey part is-he is a high school science teacher. He has now been a good customer for many years and trusts us to go to his house.

I think we are talking about obtaining contact info. Ebay definitely does not supply the street address when you obtain contact info. That's why the posters are saying to get it from the phone #. Is it all becoming clearer now?

This is really not related to an auction, but the subject is similar to an dealing I had with a customer at work a while back.
I had a gentleman come into my place of employment and wanted to buy a gas cap for his car. He had forgotten to put it back on after filling up. (This is somewhat common) After getting him his gas cap, he asks,
"Can I install this myself?" I couldn't help but laugh as I had to ask him if he had ever pumped gas into his car before. Yes, stupid people do exist.
Another for the DUH list is when we have to special order an item, we require customers to prepay for the part. Once the item comes into the store (Usually in a few days) we call the customer to let them know that it is there. Most of the time, customers come get their items within a few days. Once in a while we have a few that forget, so we call again. (once a month for 3 months) You would not believe how many people do not pick up the items they already paid for. Once I even had a guy tell me to just return it and did not ask for a refund. He paid over $300.00 for this item and didn't want his money back.
Yes, many stupid people out there.

Thanks for the idea of pulling the contact information. I did think of that but why should I have to go through all the research to investigate this. I am not Magnum P.I. and I shouldnt have to do this for a $10.00 item. Besides, who knows if the phone number in his contact information is correct. It could be his home address, a cell phone number, or even his work number. I have already contacted the buyer and asked for his address. If the buyer wants his item bad enough he should provide an address,. If the screwball will not provide his address then the item doesnt get shipped and the money is mine to keep.

logansdad,
Here's one solution: Ask him if he will at least give you the city and state where he lives. Find the nearest UPS office and ship the item UPS ground to the office address with his name on it. He can then pick it up there. I've had that done before not due to concern about someone knowing my address but because I didn't want an expensive left on my doorstep all day.

the package can also be mailed to his name and "general delivery" and his city and state. It will go to the post office and he can pick it up there.
