EBay has done a lot better than others, I'd take eBay stock over AOL stock. EBay is the darling of the internet.

Ebay achieves record revenues and they're overpriced?
"Online net transaction revenues in Q2-02 increased 66% year-over-year to a record $235.3 million, driven by 48% year-over-year transaction revenue growth in the U.S. and 152% year-over-year growth internationally. This transaction revenue growth was partially offset by an 11% year-over-year decrease in third party advertising revenues. As a result, consolidated Q2-02 net revenues increased 47% over the $180.9 million generated in Q2-01.
eBay users transacted a record $3.40 billion in gross merchandise sales, or GMS, during the second quarter, representing a 51% year-over-year increase from Q2-01. eBay hosted a record 145.2 million listings during the quarter, representing a 47% year-over-year increase from the 98.7 million reported in Q2-01.
eBay achieved double-digit year-over-year growth rates in gross merchandise sales across virtually all top-level categories."

I bought in at $37 a good time back and recovered my investment at $50 so everything from here on out is pure profit. You won't find me complaining about them and they are not "overvalued" nor is the price based on future growth. just my 2 cents on that one. Have a great weekend all !

Ebay is selling at something like 5 times their return. That is overpriced.

Geez - ebay has a P/E ratio of 116 and you say they're not over-valued?? Ebay's lofty stock price is based on 1) very aggressive projections of future growth and 2) investor insecurity (they're fleeing to 'safe' stocks).
Granted, ebay is one of the very few tech companies that consistently makes money. But they do not make the money to support such a stock price unless investors believe that they will actually meet the numbers that have been projected.
By the way, I am not 'anti-ebay'. But I used to work on Wall Street and have a basic knowledge of stock market fundamentals.

As long as earnings grow at a faster rate than the price, the PE will drop. Is there any competitive pressure that will drive earnings down? No. Is the market growing? Yes. Based on future earnings ebay is cheap.

This isn't about Ebay stocks but it is about stocks. My sister worked for a fiber optics company in Baltimore. At one point her stocks were at $160 a share. She wanted to sell and her husband and her accountant said "No wait, they'll go even higher". She would have made about $300,000. As of this past Friday, they were worth $5.55 per share. How sad. She never should have listened to those men. After the stocks started dropping, the company cut back and laid off about 300 employees. My sister was in the last bunch to go. She has however found another job. She's also still holding on to those stocks and hoping. Barbara

barbkeith, I was saddened to hear that. I was in the same boat with a bunch of Worldcom stock as I used to work there. I hadn't told anyone that I had it as I wanted to cash in someday and buy a house but looks like that won't be happening.
These are tough times for a lot of stockholders and my thoughts and prayers go out to them...your sister included.
