On 7/1/02 I shipped a 46 pound package with $125.00 worth of merchandise to a customer in Venice, CA from Alabama by UPS ground. Shipping cost was $31.21
Without going into all the details the package was returned to me on 7/23/02 because UPS stated there was no such address and that the seven day notice they mailed the customer never received a response.
On 7/16/02 I received an email from the customer wanting to know where their
merchandise was. A check of the tracking number disclosed the package was being
returned effective 7/17/02 because of the above listed reasons.
Email and a phone conversation with the customer disclosed that UPS had messed up and that the address was a good one, that the house was clearly marked and visible from the street. The customer never received the so called notice in the mail.
I contacted UPS Customer Service by phone (It's great to talk to real live people 7/24) and explained that they had let one slip thru the cracks. They were very apologetic and
gave me a 3rd party billing number to ship the package at UPS expense by One Day Air.
The package is being shipped 7/24/02 at a cost to UPS of $124.70
If this had been shipped thru the USPS I would still have headaches and the merchandise would more than likely be on sale on eBay's USPS site.
Needless to say i'm elated with the service UPS provides.

UPS delivered a package to my old address (my sister's fault) but they got the signature of a stranger! I have never seen that package for over a year, and it is homemade items so it's not like, here's your money go buy another one.

Your post tells me that it took UPS 24 days to deliver your package, but they admitted it was there fault so that is good service. I have shipped over 5,000 items with USPS and they lost 1 and damaged 1. I think I will stick with them even with the price increase.

TOOLHOUND,,,,,,AS LONG AS YOU STICK WITH THE POST OFFICE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO STICK IT TO YOUR CUSTOMERS.......
ALSO IF YOU WERE TO USE UPS YOU WOULD NOTICE QUITE A DIFFERENCE IN PRICES. THAT'S EXACTLY HOW I WIN POINTS WITH MY CUSTOMERS WHEN I SEND THEM A CHOICE. UPS WINS, HANDS DOWN. THEY APPRECIATE THE ADDED EFFORT.
THE POST OFFICE MUST BE A MATTER OF CONVIENCE FOR YOU.
SET UP A UPS ACCOUNT , IF YOU ARE ABLE TO. MAYBE YOU ARE IN A REMOTE AREA OR SOME OTHER SITUATION. THERE IS NO REASON TO KEEP SUBSIDIZING THE GOV. FOR THEM TO THROW THE MONEY AWAY ON SILLY THINGS. LIKE THAT BICYCLE RIDER. .02 CENTS.

I recently had an abominable experience w/ UPS. I sent 2 similiar items to 2 different customers. The UPS guy put the wrong labels on the 2 packages. The 1 pkg shipped to maine. The person in Maine brought it to his mom in Canada. The other customer was in SC. I called UPS as soon as the lady in Canada contacted me. They were courteous & said they would rectify everything - regardless of the item now being in Canada. They made the mistake & they would get the item from Canada to South Carolina. I gave them both ladies phone numbers, etc. I then emailed the customers & told them they would hear from UPS directly. About 10 days go by & I hear from one of the ladies that she never heard from UPS. I called again & was told I had to talk to my local UPS office. I called them & they told me they couldn't figure out how to get the item out of Canada! Another few days went by & still nothing got done. Then they picked up the item in South Carolina. Individuals who were responsible were not responding to messages or returning calls. Finally they came up with the idea that the Canadian lady repackage & bring her item (very large & cumbersome) to a Mailboxes store & use UPS' own account number to ship. It finally got worked out, but, it took about 2 months! Really soured me on UPS.

CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE WHERE THOSE MISTAKES WOULD STILL BE WITH THE POST OFFICE IN CHARGE? THEY WON'T EVEN BEGIN ANYTHING FOR 30 DAYS. AND THEN 45 MORE DAYS TO RECTIFY. TWO MONTHS WAS PRETTY FAST.

Well, folks, here is my UPS story for today! I'd ordered a pants set from QVC but it's horrible and I needed to return it. I went to our local UPS office and they wanted $9.70 to send it the cheapest rate from CA to PA.
I declined in horror, went to the P.O., and I sent it via parcel post for $4.65. So what gives here? Is there something I'm missing? I figured I'd try UPS first since that's the way QVC ships, charging about $4.50 for shipping. Hmmmmmmmmm.

toolhound,
The package was shipped 7/1/02 and the delivery attempt was made on 7/9/02.
UPS then sent a post card (so they claim)(never received by the customer) to the address (thru the US mail) to the customer. They have seven days to respond after the post card is mailed. If they don't the package is returned.
The package was shipped back to me on 7/17/02 and I received it on 7/23/02.
I shipped the package again on 7/24/02. The customer should have the package 7/25/02
True UPS makes mistakes as does our illustrious post office, but they are so few and far between that I can live with it. The plus sides of UPS far outweigh the minus sides.
I would have cost $81.95 to ship this package by Priority mail and $39.15 to ship it by Parcel post, without insurance or tracking.

Jackswebb: Since you asked--the package weighed 1 pound 4 ounces. No, I'm not a regular UPS customer. It was just so odd to me that I thought I'd bring up the incident here. The $$ difference was enough that it was worth it to me to drive 1/2 mile down the road to the post office. Ah well!
