I recently bought a nice old tin bread box that had contact paper on it. I was able to get the paper off without any problems but the tin is now very sticky. I have heard of a substance that will remove sticky stuff from items but i cant remember what it is called, anyone know? If you happen to know where i can get some please post that also. I live in up state new york just for reference. Thanks a ton in advance.

Lighter fluid works great.

If you don't want to use lighter fluid you can purchase some of this un-do but you might try the lighter fluid first on a small area, it really does work.

Un-du. It is available at all Bed, Bath and Beyond stores. It removes price stickers so perfectly that you could actually use them again. It is an awesome product.

The best thing I have found on metal is WD-40 or any household oil works good too. If it is old price stickers that have been on a long time you can let the oil set on it a few hours and it will come right off.

Yes, I agree, UnDu is the best, followed by Goo Gone. UnDu is more expensive than Goo Gone, but it's not as oily as Goo Gone. Best price for UnDu I've seen is Bed Bath & Beyond - $7.99/4oz, even better when you use the 20% off coupon they send you in the mail. I love the little scraper that is on the bottle, it helps to get the label up so you can squeeze the UnDu under to to loosen it. I keep an empty UnDu bottle just to use the scraper with the Goo Gone.

uaru: Thanks for the link. I see Walmart and Menards also stock it, I might check out their prices as well.

For pottery, glass and china, I use 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. I picked up 8 gallons of the stuff at an auction a while back. You can get it at any drug store, but you may have to ask for it. They usually only display the 70% household grade. Just be careful using it on old painted surfaces of other items, as it will remove unsealed paint.

Another product: De-Solve It. I"ve used that for years, even on book jackets, where it removes the dirt also and makes the jacket like new. (Do air it out overnight though--the odor can be strong at first. And dry it off with a soft cloth after rubbing it on.) Some of the suggestions above sound great and I may try them when my current stuff is used up.

I will share one of my trade secrets:

Buy some "Howard Feed-N-Wax" furniture preservative. It's a mixture of bee's wax and orange oil and it's available at most hardware stores. It will quickly dissolve any sticky residue from tape or stickers without harming the item.

It's not highly toxic like "Undu" or "Goo-Gone" or lighter fluid and it won't strip paint or produce toxic vapors.

And best of all, it does wonders on old wood furniture, making scratches disappear and enhancing the color of the wood. Buy some!!

Peanut butter. Saw it on a TV show one time. It's worked for me.

I had masking tape residue on my kitchen table. A neighbour told me to use vegetable oil - I poured a little on there, waited a few minutes, and rubbed it right off! This would be a safe way to start - no chemicals!

Laquer thinner works well too.
Next time before you remove the paper though, use a hairdryer and heat up the paper. The heat releases the glue and most will come up with the paper. Then if any glue stayed on the item, you can use the paper to remove the glue by blotting it.
Then the rest that didn't come off can be cleaned up with thinner on a rag. Then just rub it off.

I use Orange Glo for just about everything in my home. I know the guy in the commercial for Oxy Clean and Orange Glo is irritating but these products really work. Orange Glo will take off just about anything from any surface. I removed grease from flat paint with this product. It is completely non toxic and smells wonderful.

Good, old-fashioned WD40 works on most smooth surfaces without damage. It smells good, too!

Good Luck!
