do you mean reduce the size of the picture, or reduce the K in sending it (it is 50k and you want it to be 5k)

Actually, while we're on the topic, how do you change the jpeg size of an image? I use a scanner often, and then when I go to AW to upload the file it's too big. I end up rescanning it and cropping some of it out, trying to upload it again, etc. etc.

Make sure the resolution you are scanning at is low (72-96 dpi) - if a digital camera, you can use a low image quality. For the internet, pictures don't need to be higher than 96 dpi, and 72 is usually sufficient.
If you are scanning at a low resolution, and the picture is still too big, you will have to adjust the image size. Many scanner programs have options to scan to a different size, whether by entering the exact dimensions or by using a percentage of the original size (25%, 50%, etc.).
Without knowing the exact software you are using, I can't really get any more specific.
The image resolution should fix it for you.

Get a good digitsl camera with a good software program & you will never scan again. I have 2 scanners & almost never use them. I do all of my pictures with an Olympus D450 Zoom. I have Adobe Photo Deluxe H.E 3.0 software which works wonders on pics. I can downsize, crop, ehance color & contrast. As far as I am concerned this is the way to go for pics for ebay. I reduce the original down to about 40 KB & it comes out great.

Thanks! I'll try the scanning at a different size - I have an HP and it lets me do percentages. I like scanning as opposed to using my digital camera because I do a lot of videos, and I scan the back of them so people can read what it's about. I use my camera for eveything else and it works great. I run into problems when I scan books because they are larger and end up being a higher resolution too.

I use the 'resize' feature on the cheapo software that came with my scanner.

You need the free program "irfanview". Once you use it a bit, that's all you'll use for any ebay stuff. Sizing a scan to anythink you want is 2 clicks. Perhaps equally important, cropping is outline and click. I try resizing with several of the pix programs and irfanview is the only one that works well, easily and quickly. IMHO

I use a shareware package call MyThumbnails Pro by Anix Software. If you do a lot of pictures, it is great to resize 1, 5, 10, 50, or 100 pictures at a time. You set the size you want and the software does the rest. I have been using it for 4 years now -- I take my pics at 4mega pixels and down size them to 400 x 400 for ebay. Great resolution and small size to load quickly on Ebay.
I have seen a lot of other jpg sizing share ware software so probably any would do.

not sure whether you meant change the size ie; pixel dimension, or the file size, so I did both, file size optimized to about 78K and pixel dimensions to 640 wide,..did a quick cleanup on that blue bleed thru too...better be quick, down it goes tomorrow...
bye bye

Prof51- This is a great thread, I don't know how you fixed the .jpg for the person but I think that was really nice, and think you should tell us all more about scanning and pictures for ebay I understand about half of the posts here, and would really like to learn how to use my scanner-
It takes losey pictures of jewelry, because the user is a novice.
I use ulead and photo studio 2000 I only know about 4 buttons on each one.
SO ANYONE THAT HAS EASY TRICKS PLEASE SHARE???
THANKS

Irfanview is the best. As far as scanning in at a lower resolution -- I hate poor pictures. Just make them smaller with irfanview and you are in business. It is a snap to resize and even adjust quality, and like someone else said -- it is free.

Thanks everybody for their responses, especailly bidsbids. The .jpg is way too big to put on an auction and I wanted it to be a smaller size so that it would load faster.

I scan into Adobe Photoshop 7, do my image size adjustments and other editing, then send the file to Adobe ImageReady to optimize it's size down so it loads easily on Ebay...

Hate to brag about Photoshop but that ImageReady is a MIRACLE!
To resize in IrfanView, just go to the Image menu and select Resize/Resample. Piece of cake.

Imageready is the greatest thing since pockets on shirts for Ebay, you can shoot your photos/scans at highest resolution for great quality and then optimize them down to tiny file size with barely any quality loss...Nothing on Ebay gripes me more than great big huge fuzzy pictures that take forever to load and are too wide for a page view.....bye bye seller, I'm looking elsewhere...

I d/l-ed Irfanview - but I only see how to change the size of my pic.
Will it "crunch" or optimize it too?

After you RESIZE your pic, you SAVE it off of the FILE tab >>SAVE AS....
When you open SAVE AS, look down at the bottom RIGHT & pick OPTIONS -- this will bring up the OPTIONS DIALOG BOX...
See the SLIDER BOX? Adjust to taste (this is the CRUNCHER) & choose JPG-PROGRESSIVE -- close out of here & then SAVE
Dat simple!

Thank you, Tom!
I'm still struggling however.
I found all the things you say...if I check "progressive", do I need to un-check something else?...are some of them mutually exclusive?
My problem is: I can't see any difference in the number of bytes...even when I "half" the picture", as well as when I "crunch" or compress it.
I know I'm doing something wrong, or at least not doing something right.
Also, shouldn't I change it from bmp to jpg?
Thanks for bearing with me.
I've been doing pics for several years now, but systems are so different. I've had a little Polaroid Photomax (go ahead and laugh, but it has served me well) since day one - it was the cheapest thing Walmart had at the time. I do my cropping and any lighting etc. in my Photomax lab. Then I would crunch them at spinwave, then upload to AW - so all this is new to me.

Also, on the "slider box": Do I reset it for each pic, or is it a "preference" type setting that holds until/unless I change it?

1) It will remain wherever you put it until you change it!
2) Slide the slider...THEN choose JPG PROGRESSIVE...THEN Close out of the OPTIONS DIALOG BOX & you are back with your Picture. NOW: SAVE AS the picture & LOOK at your new PIC!! It will be a great looking pic, BUT MUCH SMALLER IN BYTE SIZE!!
