I don't think buy it now means instant payment. To me it simply means I agree to pay your asking price without haggling (bidding) for it.

true, but i get irritated with the ones that bin 2 hours after i list it and then i wait 2 weeks with no payment. i email them asking why i havent received payment and they say the auction only ended a week ago. umm the auction ends when u use bin not the date the auction would have ended had you placed a bid on it!

I am right with you snobbish. I hate when someone uses the buy it now feature and then is either slow to pay or doesn't pay at all.

I agree that th auction ends when bin is used. I put in my TOS that payment is due within 14 days from end of auction. That gives the buyer plenty of time to get it done.

When I buy with buy it now I send payment or pay with PayPal the same day if possible. I expect promt payment when I sell with buy it now also. I have had a few lately that did not pay untill I had filed NPB (10-14days) or sent a few emails reminding them to pay. I am using buy it now less becuuse of these buyers. I think I am better off to let the auction run the full 7 days and maybe get more money for the item if I am going to have to wait that long for my money anyway

There are definitely a few glitches in the Buy It Now system.
I, too, shy away from it because of the large amount of impulse buyers that turn out to be deadbeats on these listings.
I pay a listing fee as well as a fee for BIN.
The impulse buyer ends my listing and never pays.
What do I think?
I doubt there will be a change anytime soon ~ eBay gets to keep the original listing fee, the BIN fee and the second listing fee when I am forced to re-list.
Why should they fix it when it makes them money?

Do you have terms and conditions in your auctions that state when you expect payment and what may happen if you don't get it?
I have a "High bidder must contact me within 3 days of end of auction; payment within 10 days of end of auction." on every auction. That way it sets up the expectation and also I feel more justified when I have to send a NPB alert out. (I have only had to relist something once for a NPB situation, knock on wood!)
Some sellers have harsher terms and talk about not hesitating to leave negatives for NPB's...

i have no tos in my auction really since i havent had to have one. the majority of my sales are bin and have been paid promptly. goes for auctions as well. only ever filed one npb for someone placing a bid who lived in japan. my auction does state i ship to us and canada only. maybe its about time i included a tos in my auction.
i just kind of figured it was common sense to pay in a timely manner. guess not.

Although there are no clear cut definitions on using Buy it Now I have always felt that is someone uses this feature they should be willing to complete the transaction in a timely manner. Frankly I personally feel it should be immediate especially considering it may have received bids and went beyond the Buy it Now price.
My experience has been the majority of people using this option send their payment in the mail. I end up waiting what seems to be an unreasonable amount of time sometimes weeks until their payment arrives. Sure there is always an exception to the rule and every so often someone uses PayPal and I get paid immediately.
I think with the new Set price feature eBay has introduced one of the two should become a mandatory “pay now” not later venue.
