I know I can depend on you wonderful people to give me good advice. I dropped my Kodak DC220 camera an it doesn't work now. Kodak said it would cost $35.00 just to look at it. Should I see about repair or just get a new one? I only use it for ebay so always have used an AC adapter but all the new Kodak ones seem to only use batteries. What ones do some of you like best? I sell a little bit of everything so need close up for trade marks, etc. Is auto focus as good as zoom? Thanks for your comments! Harriett

I use a Olympus D460 w/optical zoom & macro function. Purchased it on Ebay for $160.00. The 2X macro zoom is really great for those close in shots.

I use an Olympus C-450 Zoom have had it for over 2 yrs. This model is no longer made, but you can't go wrong with Olympus. Go tp Ubid.com & check out prices & cameras. The newer ones will go up to 4meg pixels. The more pixels the sharper the pic. Mine is only 1.2 pixels, which was very good back when I bought it. I paid $250.00 for mine at Costco wholesale whhich saved me about $50.00 off retail.

I looooove my Sony Mavica 73, which I"ve had for 3 years (discontinued now)-- the battery thing works well, and the ease of use, with the disks, is wonderful. There have been many threads here about cameras, and many many people like the Sony Mavicas.

I was a complete camera novice and can take good closeups of jewelry or whatever now, so anyone with any experience would do well with a camera like mine. Good luck on your decision.

By the way, when I decided I wanted the Mavica 73, I went on the internet to find it, since it was in the process of being discontinued, and got it for under $300.

I love the disks for the Mavica. You're not tied to your PC to download pics, the disks are cheap, and nearly all laptops and PC have a floppy drive. Fill a disk, put in your bag and get another disk. Also having 20 pics on a disk is much easier to manage than the higher storage options.

I just hope that the trend remains for using cheap disks in digital cameras. But it doesn't look that way.

Decide what is important to you first.

Are external flashes a requirement?
How fast a lense do you want?
How many control settings do you want?
Will you want to do extreme closeups?
Will you have a need for high resolution?
Will you ever want to upgrade your camera?
What are you willing to spend?
and so on...

When you know what you want in a camera then you can go and check the reviews and features on the cameras available. This review site Digital Photography Review is the most detailed and independent I've seen.

I shopped for 2 months before I decided, what to buy. What I needed in a camera might not meet your needs, or might be overkill for your needs.

I love my Mavica too! I have a FD-71 (3 years old - no longer available) I use it strictly for the internet, and it's perfect. The ability to store and transfer photos on floppy is what makes it so great. You can still get Sony floppy disc cameras (I don't know the present model numbers) With auto focus and macro focus it's a no-brainer.

Sony Cybershot - expensive but the same technology as Mavica, much faster and uploads are a snap and so fast - hook up camera to usb port, and upload 1,000 pics in 3 minutes or less.

I love mine!

I just dropped my Canon-A40 digital camera and i sent it away to get repaired and the estimate was 260--I went to a local compUSA and I looked at all the cameras and decided that the Nikon 885 was the best camera for me. 2 inch macro shot is fantastic.

Sony Mavica, I have the FD-73, bought it from advice I found right here on AW. Great camera & so easy to use.

Edited to add:

It's fantastic for close-ups.

Thanks to all of you for your comments!! I had gone to look at the store and didn't really know what some of the terms meant. My son had gotten the Kodak for me so he took care of the details but he lives too far away to help a lot now. It looks like the Olympus or the Sony will be what I need to shop for. Any further comments will be welcomed.

I just took a look at what was on Ubid.com. There are some terrific buys on major mfrs digital cameras. They change all of the time, so if you don't see what you want today, keep looking.

Sony Mavica. Still working great after 2 1/2 years of heavy use. Easy to use.

Just thought I would chime in with my camera of choice. I have also been using a Sony Mavica (FD-92) and love it! Many great features, but the best by far is the extra large viewing screen on the back. It is so much easier viewing your pictures compared to the postage stamp size screens on other cameras.

Hi Gang! I went shopping today and purchased a Sony Mavica FD100. I played with it a little while and already have figured out how to do the pictures with the disk and have them ready to attach to the auction. That is a milestone for me since I usually can't figure out directions like "do it in the usual manner" --I don't know the usual manner or I wouldn't be reading the book. Anyway those of you who said it is so easy are definately right. Thanks for all your help!! Now if sales will pick up all will be well.
