I just noticed second chance for the first time tonight while checking a bid history.
I sell rubber stamps & have several of each design, so thought this would be a good thing for me.
I sent two second chance emails, but then was wondering what if the bidder doesn't go for it. How would eBay know this, will I be charged a FVF if they don't buy & if they do, how would eBay know that. Is this an honor system or what.

I used this feature last week on an item I never received payment on.
Ebay sent out the email and set it up in my items for sale as a buy it now with the price I had stated. It expired after 7 days just like any auction. they would have taken FVF only if it sold. they also charged for listing it.

Interestingly second chance appears in completed auctions as well, either sold or unsold. So it's telling your high bidder you had a bunch and were willing to sell for less. But only if they look.

And I thought it was such a great feature, I don't think so anymore. Specially because it's made "public" & the 2nd listing fee charge when a listing fee was already paid.
I do have several of each item I am selling & second chance would be great if it were just between th buyer& me. It's only a 50 cent difference, but still....don't want to make my high bidder mad.
Thank you for your replies.

Mcjane,
You are getting misinformation on this subject from the others who responded to your post. For the true way Second Chance works, view eBay's website at:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/index_popup.html?sell=personal_offer.html
You will see that there is NO listing fee for Second Chance. You are only charge a Final Value Fee if the second bidder takes your offer. Also, the only people that can view the Second Chance are the seller and the person who the second chance is offered to. I've used this feature many times myself and have been quite pleased with it. I'm sure that if you experiment with it you'll find that you can have some great results! Hope that helps!

I write down all of the bidders e-mail addresses before the close of the auction. Then if the high bidder turns out to be a deadbeat, I get a hold of the next bidder in line and send them an e-mail. Works great. I have about a 90% success rate doing that.

Hi Jack, always nice to see a reply from you.
Know what you mean too, think I might
re-think second chance. There are better ways.

Just remember... it is against eBay rules to use their contact information to circumvent eBay fees. If you pull the other bidders contact information and contact them by yourself after the auction, you are breaking eBay rules. All it takes is one upset person to report you to eBay and you could get into serious difficulties. Plus, there are considerable benefits to using the Second Chance. They include
1) Ebay will continue to provide the bidder with their insurance coverage (helps put some bidders at ease)
2) You and your bidder are still able to participate in the feedback process (puts BOTH parties at ease)
3) It's quicker than sending out an e-mail to the other high bidders
4) Provides a time-limit for the offer. You can set 3,5,7, or 10 days as the offer deadline. It helps free up your inventory quicker if the offer is not accepted
With all the people out there just itching to report violations to eBay, I'm not going to risk my business to circumvent a few dollars in FVF's. Just remember... you are offering these products to a second-highest bidder. What's to stop them about thinking why you wouldn't sell it for even less? And then what's to stop them from getting upset when you won't? All it takes is one upset customer like this to report you to eBay. My advice is be careful and just don't do it! Stick with eBay's Second Chance feature, that's what it's there for.

Words of wisdom, there can be no argument with your post, I agree 100% & will take no chances with my standing on eBay for a few cents an auction.
You have changed my mind.
Thanks.

Jane,
Glad to help! Second chance really has been great for me. Just two weeks ago I had a widget that normally sells for $15-20 sell for $50+. I made a second chance offer to the 2nd highest bidder and sold another one for over $50! It was a nice $80 some odd dollar profit. All you need is a few good bidding wars like that and you have it made!

I have offered 2nd chance a couple of times when the bidding was vigorous. I wish the bidders had taken advantage of it. I believe that the bidders do not realize it is a legal offer through eBay, and they ignore the offer.
