I don't have anything listed on eBay right now....haven't had in a month or so.

Was cleaning out my email for seller ID...in my junk mail, I had a "Question for Seller", which I sent to my "Inbox", then emptied my junk mail folder.

When I went to my "Inbox" I noticed it was a 69K email, so was relustant to open it. So I copied the item # and went to eBay, to try to see what it was, but it was an invalid number.

Looked in my AW closed auctions; still couldn't find number; finally opened the d----d thing!

Someone was asking about some gold-trimmed Fire King dishes which I never listed.

The ID of the person with the question is someone I've sold to....[b][i]but it gives a different seller ID in the body![i][b] Nothing to make it 69K.

I just found a virus, didn't I?

[b]Kiara[b], do you still have the virus scan site I need? (not Symantec) Thought I bookmarked it, but apparently not.

Thanks all!

PS - This was in Hotmail - and someone said the other day that we can't get a virus in our computer from Hotmail, but I don't know about that - especially since theyy claim to scan for viruses.

Still d/l-ing scan...but get this.

Not only is the auction # invalid, the user ID of the sneder is invalid too!

Is the UBB not working any more? I just scanned my original post, but don't want to go into it right now to see if I've done something wrong.

The scan found no viruses.

The user ID is valid (I left out an "s" when I searched for it. The seller is a power seller, but doesn't have anything listed currently. The item number is invalid. (I am not "[email protected]"

I'm going to post this 69K email in its entirety in hopes someone can figure it out and why it came to me at my Hotmail account:

"Does the price bid buy the entire set? In other words one price for the whole set? Thank You!

gc2, you can only "catch" a virus from an email that download and read on your computer.

Unless you download or click a link that allows something to dowload to your computer you are reasonably safe with your email.

The emails are stored on their servers and not your computer.

However Outlook or Outlook express downloads the emails to your computer.

Yahoo allows you to virus scan an attachment before downloading.

Whoever told you that you can't get a virus from hotmail is nuts. I have picked up 3 & all are from hotmail. I don't use outlook, I have heard too many bad stories about viruses through it

Perhaps it is the same as what was discussed on this thread?

Sanmar, then somehow you are downloading info from Hotmail to your computer.

You can't get a virus from reading email from a site that does not send the mail to your computer.

I use yahoo and have yet to get a virus on my computer. I don't download any attachement or click on links of people I don't know, I also use Norton religiously.

I just got one too on Yahoo. Looks like it could be a virus that was caught before I got it. The message info show's it is 157 K but there is only a to and from info, subject line of webdesign and body of the email. Also, there is NOTHING to download, no attachments or anything else! HUMMMM If it was a virus, thanks, Yahoo 'cuz I didnt recive it! WHEW !

Most malicious code has to be over 100K to execute. Therefore, if you go into your email program and set your preferences to not download messages over 100K in size, you'll leave most viruses, worms, Trojans, etc. on your mail server, where your ISP typically deletes old mail after 30 days.

If a large file turns out to be something safe, like digital photos from Aunt Susie of her birthday party, most email programs have ways to "retrieve message from server," so you can get that one and not have to download the other offending ones.

I've been getting a LOT of emails lately that are fake "your email could not be delivered" messages that probably have malicious code (Klez) as a payload. Thanks to 100K filtering, the payload gets left on the mailserver instead of downloaded to my computer.

janusaries - That is a wonderful idea and I just set my e-mail properties up to delete from server all e-mail over 100KB. I think I get sent the Klez about 5 times a week and this will take care of it. Do you know how many KB the Klez virus contains? Todays possible virus with an attachment did not seem to take quite as long as the ones I have been getting but I still I do not open anything with an attachment if I do not recognize the sender.

buyhigh--

I've had a few viruses get through that were under 100K, but the 100K cutoff catches a LOT of stuff (I have Norton AntiVirus to catch the rest).

I'm not so sure you should make your setting "delete from server" vs. "don't download from server," or you may be deleting messages from friends that you want to keep. (Especially if your friends are like mine and forward interesting graphics/photos from time to time, or write long, chatty messages.)

The 100K filter does seem to be blocking most instances of Klez and Kak from my machine. Obviously infected emails are typically titled "A Fun New Game," "Message Delivery Failure," or is an obviously forwarded file picked at random from some stranger's machine.

Only time my machine ever caught a virus was when I hadn't downloaded Norton updates in 2 weeks, caught Kak, downloaded the updates, found Kak and deleted it, only to find that it had already overwritten parts of my Windows registry and all programs that were not already open could not be opened (including all my browsers). I had to get on another machine and go to the Symantec website and find out how to manually edit my Windows Registry to get functionality back. (If I'd had a browser open on the infected machine, I would have been able to download a direct "fix" from Symantec, but I was stuck.) I've been religious about downloading the virus updates ever since, LOL!

Since no one sends me anything but short messages, the 100KB cutoff will work just great for me. Wish I had known to do it before because while I update bi-weekly I still have the old good for life of computer Norton virus program and while they will inform me I have a virus and which one and delete it upon request, in order to erase the message and attachment from my inbox, I have click edit - select all and delete. This should save me a lot of time and annoyance
